Injuries

I'm starting to get a little worried about all the injuries the City players seem to be picking up,some of them might be little niggles and knocks but they all add up.

Does anyone else have any views on the matter

While listening to the Bury game I was a little concerned too - Gerrbrand making his first start and came off pretty quickly, and McCarthy supposedly had a knock too. Connolly has been out lately, and Dublin hasn't been the fittest lad in the squad. Hughes still out too.

It doesn't look great, but I don't think it's too worrying just yet, I think we still have enough cover at the minute, the central defence is perhaps where the most worry lies with Gerrbrand out again.

We should be alright for now, if we pick up another couple of 1 month + type injuries we may find ourselves stretched.

It's a little disturbing that we're picking up this many injuries when the season isn't even three weeks old.

However, as long as the squad can cope, we'll be OK.

Better hope the squad is big enough!

But do you think it's a fitness issue or have they just been unlucky

Bit of both, I think.

Some of the players that have been injured lately were already nursing small injuries (Gerrbrand and Connolly spring to mind) which became more serious after trying to play a game. Other than that some have just been unfortunate, Kisnorbo was probably unlucky more than anything since he hadn't really attempted too much physical training before re-injuring himself in close-season.

We've signed a load of injury-prone duffers and we don't have the expertise to overcome the injuries. Either that or we've been extremely unfortunate!

I tend to go along with what you said first "injury prone duffers"

This is what you get with a small squad. We are being forced to play players with niggles, and by playing them, their injuries won't always get better

We're in a bit of a catch-22

We can either have a large squad with totally unknown players who dont cost us much in terms of wage - that's no way to get promoted.

Or we can spend more money on fewer players. Many of the players we've signed are young, not too experienced, and not terribly expensive - the most we've paid in the last few years is 500k on Conners, we've hardly set the transfer market alight.

Bottom line is we can't afford a big squad with expensive players, Levein's job is to build a reasonble size squad by finding value for money players - Maybury and Hughes spring to mind. And in some cases those value for money players are less expensive for that reason - they're injured. Kisnorbo was injured when he arrived, de Vries wasn't in great shape either, and Maybury wasn't quite match fit and so on...

My concern is that this squad is a lot like the squad we had when Pleat was manager-Mediocre

Well I hope its not like this all season, if players start getting injured after only playing 1-3 games in a row then we have a serious problem and will never get consistency. I also think the club tell white lies with injuries so when they say 3 weeks for gerrbrand I am expecting 4-6 weeks. Since hughes was originally going to be fit for sheff utd and now we are hoping for comeback after international break, thats quite a difference.

Gerrbrand had been playing games before he came so this was a massive shocker to me.

Injuries happen, fact of life. If players had the same kind of injuries particularly muscular injuries, I would put it down to training, but seeing as the players out are suffering with a variety of ailments, I'd say we're unlucky.

It's often the case start of season. All the fitness training in the build up is not the same as matchplay and, after an idle few months they suddenly start playing twice a week - bit daft really.

Then there's the temptation to keep key players in the side if they have niggles and the "full-court-press" system we play is pretty intensive and will take its toll until players get used to it.

Finally some of the players like Momo won't be used to playing so much. All the points mean injuries are likely and I think we're stretched already.

Well, I think things are a bit more complex than that,

but I still agree with you that we've been unlucky...
