Car Insurance Risen 2014?

Recommended Posts

this is a tough one you would probably be better off talking to citizens advice, or somebody in the insurance industry, call their bluff though if i were you. what i personally would do is to call their bluff and say if they want to they can pay for an industry approved test to check it has not been chipped. or ask for them to prove it/for proof it has been chipped

It's possible someone declared the car chipped previously, it's unusual for an insurer to cancel for modifications when a claim has not been made. It's important to not have your insurance cancelled though as it can lead to increased premiums in the future.

I didn't really think it relevant to my question, but they believe I've got an engine chip that gives 26% or higher increase in power.

Are you 100% certain it hasn't been chipped? I'm guessing someone declared it as a modification on that vehicle in the past. If it was me I'd want to be very sure it wasn't chipped before arguing the toss. >_<

as i would have thought, both parties made a contract for insurance, look in the small print to see about termination, as i would have thought they couldn't just cancel insurance without actual proof of an uninformed modification, the owness is on them to prove it has been modified

try these guys http://www.justanswer.com/uk-lawor http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk

you could even try an ombudsman

Cheers, I'll have a look.

That's a good point. I was actually planning to SORN it anyway in January so I wasn't going to make much of it so long as they waive their 'administration fee' for cancelling, but I didn't really consider what effect it could have in the future.

There's nothing in the documentation, and it wasn't mentioned by the seller. Aside from that, it's 197bhp as standard from a 1.8l N/A engine, I doubt you can see a 50bhp (26%+) increase from that with just a chip. The only chip I've ever seen advertised a 10-24bhp increase, and it didn't exactly look legitimate...

It's been a while since I had any close involvement with motor insurance, but there are some principles which apply to all personal insurances.

- If either party to the insurance contract wants to cancel for whatever reason, they usually can, subject to the policy's contractual terms.  You can't make an insurer insure you, any more than they can force you to insure with them.

- If you are dissatisfied with the response you receive from an insurer and your complaint is not being listened to, contact their Chief Executive's office.  All policy booklets require to have a prominently displayed section detailing who to contact if you are not happy with their service.

- If you remain dissatisfied with the Insurer, approach the Financial Ombudsman Service http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/  with details of your Insurers, their reference and your complaint.
