DennisNedry Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Last year I got myself insured with Admiral (cheapest option by far) for a year for a total of £325. Renewal notice came through yesterday, been informed I will be charged £426. This is with me now being 21 rather than 20 and with a third year no claims. Thought this was just one of those well known auto-renew scams, but after re-entering my details as a new customer, and comparing via confused.com and comparethemarket.com, ~£400 is now the best I can get. 25% increase for an older driver, extra years no claims and no convictions. Is everybody else experiencing this shite? Especially want to hear from young drivers because we always get shafted.
Fox92 Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 We do always get shafted, first of all... Can't really comment yet because I'm not up for renewal until February 2015, but I usually go through the whole process of removing myself as a customer then starting over as a new customer. Even if it's with the same company... To be fair, my insurance has dropped every year and I expect it to do the same but reading this gives me another view.
Vacamion Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 See all of those 'had an accident in the last three years' fvckers? Without the rest of us funding them, they wouldn't exist. 15 years ago, it was the exception that people got out of a car after a minor collision clutching their neck and talking about compo. Now it's the rule. Blame the claims culture. That, and as a 21 year old, you are vastly more likely to have a bump than older people.

DennisNedry Posted 6 December 2014 Author Posted 6 December 2014 £400 for a 21 year old doesn't seem bad to me. Have you tried other companies? It's not too bad, but why was I charged £325 as a 20 year old, and now being charged £425 as a 21 year old? As I said in the OP this is with an additional year of no claims and no convictions. I think you should have the option to drive without insurance, with the obligation to sign legal documents stating you're prepared to pay for any damage you cause during a crash. I'd have saved about £2000 in the last 3 years if that was the case.

martyn Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Maybe try one of the insurers who install a telematics box, Ingenie for example.
Soar Fox Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Add another drive on, preferably one of your parents if they drive. That normally brings your insurance down.
DennisNedry Posted 6 December 2014 Author Posted 6 December 2014 If you put someone in a wheelchair for the rest of their life could you afford the compensation? Many would say it's so unlikely that it's worth the risk (clearly loads do considering how many uninsured drivers are on the roads). I'm not thinking of driving without insurance by the way, it just sucks being bent over a barrel by insurance companies who know you've no option. Steve_Walsh5 - cheers for the advice but already have both parents down.
potter3 Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Yeah, my renewal went up this year (as usual) but it was actually cheaper then getting a quote as a new customer for once.

Samilktray Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Stick project manager down as your occupation.
ADK Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 I think it has gone up, but your price seems quite decent. Not particularly looking forward to having to renew soon. Trouble with insurance is a lot of people collude to bring the cost of claims up. The insurance companies make more money the more you crash.
DennisNedry Posted 6 December 2014 Author Posted 6 December 2014 Stick project manager down as your occupation. Haha, care to elaborate why this would help?
Samilktray Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Haha, care to elaborate why this would help?I was messing around looking for quotes on future cars, started playing around with my occupation and project manager brought it down from 1400 to 375.
promised land Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 See all of those 'had an accident in the last three years' fvckers? Without the rest of us funding them, they wouldn't exist. That's quite a large brush you're tarring everyone with there. For the record I've had 2 accidents in the last 5 years, and it's 5 years they normally ask for. But neither was my fault as I was stationary in both, one I wasn't even in the vehicle at the time. Did I claim compo for either? No. Did my insurance premium go up after either accident? Yes, when I asked why as I wasn't at fault they said when you've had one claim you are more likely to have another, weird but in my case it was true as 2 years later another retard ran into the back of me. Back to the OP, my premium last year was £300 fully comp, this year they upped it £20 odd, I did the go compare thing again and was getting back around £270, so on the dog to my company and tell them they're not the cheapest, straight away it came down to £260, I said that was easy and quick, yes she said I just gave you a discount. So why don't they do this from the off to keep you? Because a few won't ask and just pay up the new premium price without even doing a search. Ask them and they will match or like me better your quote.
DB11 Posted 6 December 2014 Posted 6 December 2014 Hasn't it gone up this year due to the law where females aren't allowed to have it cheaper? So the insurance companies just went well sod it we'll make them the same by increasing everyones

That's quite a large brush you're tarring everyone with there. For the record I've had 2 accidents in the last 5 years, and it's 5 years they normally ask for. More people claim for injury against motor insurance than they used to, which pushes premiums upward. If you dispute that, you are wrong. I salute you for not claiming for injury when you were in a vehicle which was rear-ended, but it's weeing into the wind. I'm afraid most people *do* claim. And the rest of us have to cough up to fund the claims (no accidents in 17 years of driving, here).
Trav Le Bleu Posted 7 December 2014 Posted 7 December 2014 I was messing around looking for quotes on future cars, started playing around with my occupation and project manager brought it down from 1400 to 375. Yeah, but that's because your real occupation is stunt driver
Rob1742 Posted 8 December 2014 Posted 8 December 2014 Someone pulled out on me recently, crazy driving. Came running out the car effin and blinding at me, even though they pulled out. Then they changed their version of events, probably after talking to friends or relatives and all five of them are claiming injuries. To be fair to them, they were right at the bottom of the chain, stunk horrible, thick as pig shit and would have been the type to be influenced by phone calls telling them they can claim for injuries etc. These compensation companies are horrible, they created this hike in premiums and I can understand the less fortunate going along with it. It's basically a pay day for the less fortunate once they have an accident.
howlinmadmurfdoc Posted 8 December 2014 Posted 8 December 2014 Maybe a silly question but have you tried ringing them and saying you're not happy with the increase, every time mines been increased I just ring them and they drop it back down.
kingcarr21 Posted 8 December 2014 Posted 8 December 2014 Am i right in thinking that if your fully comp insurance lets you drive another vehicle you have to have been driving 3 years and be minimum 21 years of age? Now you have 3 years no claims and are 21 this could be why its gone up. I may be completely wrong but im sure thats the criteria for driving another car under your own insurance.
Julian Joachim Jr Shabadoo Posted 8 December 2014 Posted 8 December 2014 Add another drive on, preferably one of your parents if they drive. That normally brings your insurance down. I thought they now had to price the premium based on the highest risk driver but it's not the case My girlfriend got her insurance renewal through at £450, but with me on it it was £310, even though I have a claim from the hailstorm that wrecked my last car a couple of years ago. It's worth getting a quote with an additional driver who might not even use the car as it might take loads off the price
