Want to stand at games?

I work for a Member of Parliament. Recently I came across a bill that is to be put before parliament by Don Foster MP. The bill is an attempt to give all football clubs the freedom to build, or maintain existing, safe standing sections in their stadia if they choose; to establish minimum safety criteria that must be met for standing sections in football stadia; and for connected purposes.

Follow the link below for details.

I urge you all to write to your MP urging them to support such this bill when it reaches its second reading in the House of Commons.

Don't know who your MP is? follow the link below to find out who it is and e-mail them.

Draft e-mail template.

Dear Sir / Madam,

Football clubs are a source of pride in the local community. Over the years we have seen attendances at football games drop. This is because of two key reasons.

1) The introduction of all seater stadia (which innevitably led to the second reason)

2) Match ticket prices that rose much higher than the rate of inflation.

I would urge you to show support for the Safe Standing (Football Stadia) bill introduced by Don Foster MP when it reaches its second reading in the House of Commons (October 21st, 2011).

The bill is in support of giving all football clubs the freedom to build, or maintain existing, safe standing sections in their stadia if they choose; to establish minimum safety criteria that must be met for standing sections in football stadia; and for connected purposes.

I look forward to your reply,

Yours sincerely,

I would be very appreciative if people could spare 5 minutes to do this. Please let me know if you write, I can urge my boss to support this bill if it gets good support from everyone. Thank You

Dear *******

As I'm sure you're aware, an Early Day Motion has been tabled by Don Foster MP regarding the introduction of safe standing areas at football stadia in the UK. This, clearly, is a matter which evokes strong feelings among football fans, with 9 out of 10 fans in favour of small designated safe standing areas at grounds according to a survey conducted by the Football Supporters Federation.

The introduction of the aforementioned areas standing areas would put to an end the regular, and at times unnecessarily hostile, conflict between football fans and safety authorities at grounds, including stewards and police officers, when fans choose to stand during games as opposed to sitting down.

The arguments against having designated standing areas in football stadia are fundamentally flawed, and very much outdated from a safety point of view, a point successfully highlighted with Germany's ever-popular and much championed standing areas in the Bundesliga. Introducing safe standing areas in this country would not be a throw-back to the old days of poorly constructed, badly maintained, over-populated terraces. Instead, it would see properly policed, well maintained areas of stadiums provided with crush barriers to prevent overcrowding and the dreaded "domino effect" which caused so many issues in times gone by.

Fans in this country have campaigned for a while for the right to have a choice as to how they support their team, and it has long been suggested, both by champions of safe standing areas and also those who prefer to remain seated during games, that the choice should be in place to avoid any form of conflict and maximise everybody's individual enjoyment of the game which they so passionately love.

I am aware that you recently approved an EDM to review the decision to abolish the FLA. However, I believe that based on the strength of feeling with regards to this issue, and considering that it is a matter of free choice for a considerable demographic in your constituency and encompasses many walks of society, your support for this bill would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any reservations or questions to ask me, please feel free to send me them. If for any reason you would not wish to support this motion, I would be more than grateful if you could provide reasons as to why not, in the hope that it could, at the very least, encourage constructive debate on the matter.

Yours sincerely,

Thank you kind Sir. What a fantastic draft. Maybe we should start posting this on other club's forums. I feel this has potential.

I sent one to my local MP, the useless Leicester East MP, Keith Vaz... Alas, to no reply several weeks later <_<

Sent the draft to a Mr Stephen Dorrell of Charnwood.

Well done but you're wasting your time I sent one to him and got 'not interested' type reply. Oh and don't expect a prompt response.

I have to say that Sir Peter Soulsby was extremely supportive when I contacted him a few months ago.

Now that he's Mayor, it may be worth contacting him to add some gravitas.

These people get an awful amount of letters from constituents, be patient, contrary to what people like to believe it is a demanding job.

Youve got to try...

Dear Mr Xxxxxxxxx,

Thank you for your email. I have passed this to Mr Spellar for his attention.

Yours sincerely,

I'm intrigued about this paragraph. Is it aimed at someone in particular? Doesn't sound like a generic draft on very initial first reading (I'm reading very quickly at work, mind).

:crylaugh::crylaugh::crylaugh: But he had an election to fight then.

Don't expect him to take an interest in football again before 2015..

And as for expecting this government to challenge the Premier League, forget it..

Sounds par for the course from him.. :(

My bad, I do believe that was aimed at a particular MP. It could have been Keith Vaz but don't quote me on it.

:crylaugh::crylaugh::crylaugh: But he had an election to fight then.

Is it really that funny? Honestly? I must be missing something.

The wording of the e-mail stated quite clearly that he had had numerous meetings with the club on standing in football grounds, had been present in Parliament to support Don Foster's original bill, and intended to have meetings with the club in the future.

Numerous other MPs responded to the same question to say they did not support safe standing across the country.
