A lot students will latch on to anything vaguely left-leaning, if that's what you mean. And looking back I suppose most students I knew joined causes to impress cute girls in Belle and Sebastian t-shirts.

And of course only the Socialist Party that do this. Who says a lot of students don't follow politics? Did you get that from an attractive tagline in a UK daily?
