As you say, you can't guarantee a goal would have been scored That's the issue and also the degree of certainty is very open to different (literal) views and interpretations. The shot might have hit the post or gone wide or over the bar. You can't book and red card a player based on what is an unforeseen outcome.

We're just not as good as we like to think we are. The PL is touted as the best league in the world and then you see top teams from Europe and you begin to realise it's all FA and media hype.

I don't understand why the simple and often effective 4-4-2 has been ditched for more complicated ways of playing. Applies to many teams in the entire EFL and PL.

Well, if Trump's claim that Iranian soldiers are running around without arms or legs, it wouldn't make a lot of difference as that's pretty much what we do every week.

They should be good enough and maybe two thirds of the squad are, but if the senior management and ownership don't show any bother about the club and no interest in the players or supporters, why should they be bothered? For all that the players aren't showing much, if your owner can't be arsed and the club management are inept, you're bound to become demoralised.
