Religion has nothing to do with it, your ethnicity is a result of several generations before you and is part of your genetic make up. We’re all where we come from but that doesn’t mean you can’t re populate elsewhere and feel more connected to another culture, but that doesn’t mean your whole generational and genetic make up goes out the window and you become strictly English.

It depends how you look at it, if you feel like your whole national identity is purely where you’re born id disagree with that personally. And even for say a second generation immigrant who’s perfectly a law abiding citizen as well, that part of their bloodline and where they’ve been will still be strong to their identity and mostly like family culture as well than where they were born. Having been in Aus for a few year now, I have noticed a lot of people would consider where their family originate from first over being Australian as their civic identity tbh though i don’t think it is worth bringing up in this case anyway unless you’re looking to stoke pure racial tension.
