I agree that the pressure he was under as England manager would mean he would know exactly what to expect if he took the Man Utd job, but he's made a fair bit of money, has his knighthood. What he'd want - (in Premier League world) infinite time and no interference, he's just not going to get. He doesn't really need to get his hands dirty any more and I'm sure there are any number of well paying committees and task forces and administrative bodies to have as a very nice portfolio career with plenty of time to spend with family etc. It's like getting an Executive Director role - once you've made it to that level, you can usually always scoop up well paid work that isn't actually that taxing and a decent work life balance. And with Man Utd's track record over the last 10 years he knows how it will end, so unless he's in for one last big pay day, I can't see why he'd bother.

Never rated Amorim. Stuck to his rigid formula even while managers cheerfully set out in press conferences just how they could defeat his one trick, until even he realised he couldn't keep on with it, and then said that he couldn't change it as fast as he liked because the press would kill him (well he started it by saying not even the Pope could change his mind, so what did he expect?). He's completely out of his depth and was found out months ago, but he seems to have succeeded in getting his wish to be fired with a very handsome pay off.

He’s such a great Test batsman. I’m so pleased he’s got a second in Australia.

After the madness of the Boxing Day test, this is all rather cosy. Tucked up in bed. Radio on and settling down to listen to the gentle pitter patter of England wickets falling.

I feel for Jacks. He was brought in because our batting is so weak and because they got the Bashir experiment wrong although I think he still should have played. Arguably he couldn’t, as a spinner, do worse than a part time spinner. Stokes can’t do the all rounder role for a 5 day test. Archer has delivered a half century and a 5-for, but he must be shattered now. Tongue and Carse have been completely unthreatening. We’re effectively playing with 3 bowlers. And that’s not down to injury issues. But the batsmen’s failures loom right over this mess. If they weren’t so weak, they wouldn’t have needed to turn to Jacks. And they’ve never put the Aussie batsmen under any scoreboard. Let’s see how confident Duckett is in chasing down any total the Aussies care to set, as he once claimed they could do. At this rate he’ll have enough time to deliver on it as the Aussies won’t foul this up by not giving themselves enough time to bowl us out.

It is astonishing that (if ESPN’s stats are up to date), Archer at 39 has a higher batting average than Pope, Crawley, Smith, Stokes, Duckett and that boy with apparently all the talent in the world, Brook. Also picked up a fifer.
