Hibs are still shite but thankfully Montgomery has gone. Marcondes and Maolida the only good signs and they were both on loan. Apparently some frogs want Youan for £2m+ which they should take despite him being handy. I do think Birmingham city centre has the worst good pub / people ratio in Britain though. Astonishing how crap it is given its size. Craven Arms used to be legit man, no doubt @CosbehFox went pre BCA. Wellington I've always found the same and don't think it will ever change, just very reliable, doesn't feel like they've altered the formula there. The Jewelers Arms In the JQ used to be like walking into a carbon copy of the Salmon and had a proper Brum landlady who'd ask you "whatchyow doing opp eyurrrrr." Not been in years though, hope it's not fallen victim to the same kaleidoscopic wallpaper and carpet.

Yep, when Alex had a line up of Mitch / Ollie / Cain it was a genuinely brilliant pub. Think your new man is discovering the difference between being a manager and a landlord personally because it's like chatting to a Ryvita with him, and that's doing a disservice to Ryvita. The ones in Birmingham are still okay, but they're all so samey. Like you've said they're picking out a catalogue these days so any sense of trying something new is long gone. The Craven Arms up near the Mailbox was a genuine stunner before Black Country took it over, a corner pub at the top of a hill with a brilliant mix of cask and interesting keg. What they've done with that is nearly as unforgivable as the Salmon.

He's dogshit man. I really don't want to dig anyone out but I went in with my old man a few weeks back and he was sat on a stool by the bar watching really loud YouTube videos on his phone to the point it was genuinely distracting and annoying. Went in last Sunday and he was playing music off his phone through the pubs speakers so so loudly, Firestarter belting through your eardrums on a Sunday arvo isn't it. Absolutely remarkable drop off since Alex left. Much as I liked him I thought Cain was shit too, he never had it to be a landlord. Throw in the fact the decor now looks like you're walking into a ****ing lasagne and the whole experience is shit.

Also bomb the Black Country for what they've done to the Salmon. Disgraceful. Landlord is shit n all.

Speaking purely as a cask man, the Ale Wagon is borderline the only place in Leicester worth bothering with for me. It has everything you'd want for in a pub of that ilk - history entrenched in the city, old boys ****ing moaning about everything but with backchat from those that run it, a genuinely beautiful building and phenomenal quality cask. Needs preserving at all costs because there is absolutely no boozer like it in town and it's the sort of gaff lauded anywhere else. I think it's bloody brilliant.

You can't moan about Nottingham's pubs lacking character when you seemingly chose to go to the Brewdog and ignore the stacks of good ones? Lol Sneinton, Canning Circus, even the handful near the station which have no right being as good as they are offer way more than Leicester's what — half a dozen pubs with character? I don't enjoy bashing the place but it's pub scene is objectively sub par.

I couldn't disagree more with this and can't believe anyone would think it. Both Nottingham and Derby slaughter Leicester for pubs and bars with semblances of character, it isn't a contest. Nottingham is demonstrably better in that regard but Derby probably has the best 'good pub : city size' ratio in the UK.
