City of Leicester & Leicestershire - The Good and Historical Stuff
davieG replied to davieG's topic in General Chat
Born and Raised in Leicester · Follow Leicester Walls and gates.. In the late 15th century, Leicester still retained most of its original Roman walls, which were built of strongly mortared granite and about 2.5m thick. Archaeological evidence suggests partial destruction of the town defences after the rebellion of 1173 and sections of the wall seem to have been pulled down or ‘slighted’, but were later rebuilt. Suburbs existed outside of the walls to the north, east and south, with the River Soar to the west. Although the walls were in poor repair by Richard’s day with numerous breaches as stone was carried away to be reused, there remained only five routes into the city. The North, South and East Gates each had a small bridge across the moat which surrounded the walls, while the West Gate provided access across the Soar via the West Bridge and the Bow Bridge. The town could also be entered through the walled religious precinct of the Newarke, which was joined to the Castle precinct by the small Turret Gateway. The North Gate led to Leicester Abbey and beyond to Nottingham and York. Richard would have entered the town through this gate on 20 August 1485, first passing through the North Suburb (largely occupied by dyers and fullers) and then proceeding along the High Street (now Highcross Street) to the Blue Boar Inn. His journey to Bosworth and his posthumous return would both have been through the West Gate and across the river. After several days of public display in the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, within the Newarke, Richard’s final journey to his grave in Greyfriars would probably have been by the most direct route: out through the Newarke Gateway (still standing, now called the Magazine) and back into the town through the South Gate. The last parts of the town walls were finally removed in the late 16th century. Blue plaques now mark the locations of the four town gates. Photo. 1 The Turret Gateway is located on Castle View, just off The Newarke. It is a Grade I Listed Building, and is within the Castle Conservation Area. Image Credit: Matt Ots -

To think we forced him out for Slimani. https://www.leicestercity.news/news/he-caused-an-earthquake-after-a-leicester-city-goal-but-then-he-was-betrayed-by-claudio-ranieri/ Leicester City have had plenty of big moments in their history, but none are bigger than the Premier League title win . At the start of the 2015/16 season, the chances of Piers Morgan becoming the next Arsenal manager and Elvis Presley being found alive were deemed more likely than the Foxes winning the top flight. However, with the promise of pizza from Claudio Ranieri to keep clean sheets and Jamie Vardy deciding against becoming a holiday rep in Ibiza, Leicester defied the odds and beat everyone else to the crown. The squad was largely made up of players who had been rejected from the top clubs in England but confidence grew to a point where the Foxes’ players believed they would win the league at Christmas. Kasper Schmeichel, N’Golo Kante, Riyad Mahrez and Vardy were the ones who gained all the plaudits, but everyone played their part. In fact, one of the most iconic parts of the 15/16 season was a famous last-minute goal scored by a squad player. Photo by Michael Regan/Getty Images Leonardo Ulloa caused an earthquake with last-minute Leicester goal Leonardo Ulloa was Leicester’s record signing when he arrived for the 2014/15 campaign that saw the Foxes pull off a great escape by winning seven of their last nine games. Ulloa was an important part of the squad and stepped up in Vardy’s absence when he was out injured or suspended. An equaliser against West Ham United and brace against Swansea City but it was the winner against Norwich City that was most famous. With seconds to go, Ranieri’s men appeared to have been left frustrated by Norwich until Ulloa prodded home late on to secure a 1-0 win. It caused such a scene at the King Power Stadium that for the first time ever, an earthquake had been caused by football fans. A seismometer was able to pick up the tremor, which recorded a 0.3 magnitude earthquake and was dubbed the ‘Vardy quake’ in honour to the Leicester legend. Leonardo Ulloa said he was ‘betrayed’ by Claudio Ranieri in 2017 Even though Ulloa played a huge part in the title-winning season, the 2016/17 campaign was one that signalled the beginning of the end. The record signing of Islam Slimani meant competition for places became more intense and subsequently only started one game for the Foxes. Leicester then rejected a bid from Sunderland after Ranieri said he didn’t want to sell him – only for the Italian to exclude him from their Champions League squad list. He posted a tweet, which read: “With all respect for LCFC FANS. I feel betrayed by Ranieri and let down by the club. I will not play again for them…” A tweet from former Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa in 2017 stating he felt betrayed by Claudio Ranieri Credit: X/Twitter/Ciclone1923 A tweet from former Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa in 2017 stating he felt betrayed by Claudio Ranieri Ulloa then added in an interview with Sky Sports: “I am sad about the current situation because it’s been two wonderful years here. “But now in my situation, with me not being part of the plans, I feel that the best way forward is that I leave and I can be happy somewhere else. If I stay at the club it’s going to affect my future and my career.”

Am I the only one out of sync with this view. Less analysis and more of the action please Match of the Day should show fewer Premier League highlights and more analysis, says BBC chairman Samir Shah. The BBC has a deal to show highlights of top-flight matches until the end of the 2028-29 season, with Match of the Day broadcast on Saturday evenings and MOTD2 on Sunday evenings. Shah told the Sunday Times, external that many fans had watched Premier League goals and action before Match of the Day is broadcast. Shah said the show "should not be built around highlights". He added: "It should be built around analysis and examination of the match to give viewers a deeper insight." Although the BBC is politically independent, its chairperson is appointed by the government. In his role as chair of the BBC's board Shah is charge of upholding and protecting the BBC's independence and ensuring the BBC fulfils its mission to inform, educate and entertain. Match of the Day celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2024. It is hosted by former England striker Gary Lineker, who will step down at the end of this season. Should Match of the Day... Ying Yang In fact, in terms of non-penalty expected goals, Chelsea’s tally of 0.8 was the joint-lowest in a game against City, level with van Nistelrooy’s Manchester United against Steve Cooper’s City back in November. City’s least threatening performance of the season. They had three shots, the fewest they’ve mustered in a game all season, and they managed an expected goals tally of just 0.1. They had four touches in the Chelsea box, the joint-fewest they’ve had in a match this term.

Hence why I added this I think it's more a question of taking their eye off the ball and thinking 'they'd made it and were a safe member of the PL' hence their continual voting along with 'the 6' add in a degree of. incompetence

See I think he does. Maresca is never one to shy away from the truth. After the win on Sunday, the Chelsea boss dropped hinted that he will try and sign Hermansen again in the summer after being impressed by his performance. But once attention turned to the off-pitch issues at Leicester, the former Foxes manager was quick to defend the under-fire Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and Rudkin. He said: “I met the best people in my life in terms of football in Leicester. The owner and sporting director. “I hope for Leicester that they’re going to be a Premier League club [next season]. “I’m surprised but it’s not my job, I’m not there so I don’t know. My focus is on Chelsea but I hope they can be a Premier League club. The people there are good people, they care about the club, your family and it’s difficult to find these people in football.” I think it's more a question of taking their eye off the ball and thinking 'they'd made it and were a safe member of the PL' hence their continual voting along with 'the 6' add in a degree of. incompetence

And the way we're losing it doesn't make much difference to bring one on with 10 minutes to go when your 3-0 down I'm sure no one expects them to turn the game around but the experience gained is invaluable. If we're winning 3-0 then all the better. It doesn't need to be the same one every game either. Instead of Winks and Skipp pair one of them with Cartwright or Braybrooke for example. -
I’ve been saying this since the WSL was created. The FA and others in pursuit of the £££s missed the opportunity to create a genuinely level competitive league. Sure it may have taken longer to grow organically but they could have for example ruled that every professional club above a certain level paid a % of turnover etc to fund a WL rather than allowing current clubs to own them. We are left with this uncompetitive clone of the PL.

We’ve gone from no subs to 7 and still there are excuses for not having one of them an academy graduate. They can only use 5 of them so how about getting the tactics better with the first choice 11, Tactically you shouldn’t need to use all 5 subs and it’s not an everyday occurrence where you’re forced to play someone out of position. There’s always an excuse going for promotion, top six, top ten - more money, avoiding relegation. We have one of the best training facilities in the world that in itself should justify having at least one academy graduate starting their LCFC career on the bench for most games. -
Because FIFA & UEFA don’t like England
