  3. Woodstock Counsel of Elders Local Tribe #1969 · Follow 1 d · c1966....The Spencer Davis Group. (Stevie Winwood on left) The Spencer Davis Group was formed in 1963 in Birmingham when Welsh guitarist Spencer Davis recruited vocalist and organist Steve Winwood (who was 14 years old and in school at the time), and his bass playing brother Muff Winwood. The group was completed with Pete York on drums. Originally called the Rhythm and Blues Quartette, the band performed regularly in the city. In 1964 they signed their first recording contract after Chris Blackwell of Island Records saw them at an appearance in a local club; Blackwell also became their producer. Muff Winwood came up with the band's name, reasoning "Spencer was the only one who enjoyed doing interviews, so I pointed out that if we called it the Spencer Davis Group, the rest of us could stay in bed and let him do them." The group's first professional recording was a cover version of "Dimples", but they came to success at the end of 1965 with "Keep On Running", the group's first number one single. In 1966, they followed this with "Somebody Help Me" and "When I Come Home". They had one single issued in the US on Fontana, as well as "Keep On Running" and "Somebody Help Me" on Atco, but due to lack of promotion, none of these 3 singles got airplay or charted. For the German market the group released "Det war in Schöneberg, im Monat Mai" and "Mädel ruck ruck ruck an meine grüne Seite" (the first is from a 1913 Berlin operetta, the second is a Swabian traditional) as a tribute single for that audience, Davis having studied in West Berlin in the early 1960s. By the end of 1966 and the beginning of 1967, the group released two more hits, "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "I'm a Man". Both of them sold over one million copies, and were awarded gold record status. These tracks proved to be their two best-known successes, especially in the U.S. (where they had signed to United Artists). Jimmy Miller was their producer. In 1966 the group starred in The Ghost Goes Gear, a British musical comedy film, directed by Hugh Gladwish, and also starring Sheila White and Nicholas Parsons.[8] The plot involved the group in a stay at the childhood home of their manager, a haunted manor house in the English countryside. The film would later be considered a mistake by Winwood. In 1967, Winwood left to form Traffic; his brother Muff moved into the music industry as A&R man at Island Records. In a joint venture, the soundtrack to the film Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush featured both the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic. After the Winwoods' departure, the Spencer Davis Group regrouped with the addition of guitarist Phil Sawyer (ex-Les Fleur de Lys) and keyboardist/vocalist Eddie Hardin (ex-A Wild Uncertainty). This line-up recorded several tunes for Here We Go Round The Mulberry Bush and released the "Time Seller" single in July 1967; the b-side, "Don't Want You No More," also received radio airplay.

  7. History of Leicestershire in Images Mervin Wallace · 1 h · JAMES PICKERING & HIGH CROSS Two important relics from the past have been unveiled by a flying county archaeologist. The finds solve riddles which date back hundreds of centuries. And they join the thousands of discoveries so far made by 76-year-old Battle of Britain veteran Mr Jim Pickering. Latest evidence unearthed by the pioneering Hinckley pensioner has revealed: A Roman staging post at High Cross in Leicestershire. A Saxon palace which dates back to the eighth century.Mr Pickering is particularly excited about the county finds, which solve an argument which has been raging for generations. Some locals at High Cross, near Claybrooke Magna believe the area was once the site of a large Roman town. But Mr Pickering's aerial pictures prove that, although the Romans were there for some time, they are only used the spot as a resting place between marches. "My shots show quite distinctively that High Cross was used as a staging post, and was never anything more. Distinctive markings. Despite dating back to about 70 BC, the High Cross site has only just been discovered for three reasons: It takes a trained expert to spot the distinctive markings. They can only be seen from the air. The marks are only visible for a few hours during the year. "These outlines basically show where ditches have been dug and eventually filled in," said Mr Pickering. "The subtle difference in soil is occasionally revealed under certain weather conditions - for instance after heavy rain in the summer." If anyone can find the landmarks however, Mr Pickering can. He is one of a handful of aerial archaeologists operating in the coun try, and takes 5,000 photographs a year - all stored at his home. Some show ancient burial sites, others old churches, but one of his latest reveals an eighth century palace near Hereford - one of only five so far found in the country. "Historians in the area have always been convinced that there was a Saxon palace at this site” he said Mr. Pickering. “ Legend has it that it was the home of King Offa, whose wife convinced him to murder King Ethelbert of East Anglia, after he pledged to marry their daughter.” “My pictures show outlines in keeping with other Saxon palaces, so we believe we have solved the mystery”. (The Leicester Mercury, date unknown) *High Cross Monument - Red Star High Cross, the Roman Centre of England c.1906 A naturally strategic high point, High Cross was "the central cross roads" of Anglo-Saxon and Roman Britain. It was the site of a Romano-British settlement known as Venonae or Venonis, with an accompanying fort. Situated at the junction of 2 important Roman Roads, Watling Street (A5) and The Fosse Way, a stone monunent* at High Cross was built in 1712. Funded by the local landowner, the Earl of Denbigh, it celebrated the victories against France by the Duke of Marlborough as well as marking the centre of Roman Britain. It consisted of four Doric columns with an orb and cross above. It was struck by lightning in 1791 and only the plinth remains today. The stone monument was preceded by a wooden cross and was the site of a medieval gibbet. The two Latin inscriptions on either side the monument have been translated as: “The noblemen and gentry, ornaments of the neighbouring counties of Warwick and Leicester, at the instances of the Right Honourable Basil Earl of Denbeigh, have caused this pillar to be erected in grateful as well as perpetual remembrance of Peace at last restored by her Majesty Queen Anne, in the year of our Lord, 1712.” “If, traveller, you search for the footsteps of the ancient Romans, here you may behold them. For here their most celebrated ways, crossing one another, extend to the utmost boundaries of Britain; here the Vennones kept their quarters; and at the distance of one mile from hence, Claudius, a certain commander of a cohort, seems to have had a camp, towards the street, and towards the foss a tomb” - *The monument is currently in a state of considerable disrepair.

The City squad fly out to Evian-les-Bains on the banks of Lake Geneva on Monday. It’s a trip that will help to build the players' fitness as they train on the edge of the Alps, while it also affords new manager Steve Cooper a closer look at individuals as he builds his plans for the new campaign. The resort on the France-Switzerland border has been a regular spot for City in pre-season, with Brendan Rodgers taking the squad there two years ago. This week, City will do a week of work before finishing with training exercise matches against other sides working in the region, including La Liga outfit Villarreal. The players who head out to Evian will give further clues as to who is in Cooper’s plans for the coming season, particularly in terms of young players. In the first week of pre-season, Will Alves, Sammy Braybrooke, Logan Briggs, and Silko Thomas were all involved with the senior team from the get-go, and they will hope to continue to impress. Cooper’s squad is quickly swelling. Twenty-four players started senior training last Monday, but since then Caleb Okoli has been brought in from Atalanta, Wilfred Ndidi has rejoined the club after signing a new contract, while midfielder Brandon Cover was called up from the development squad. The 20-year-old made his senior debut last season, starting in the FA Cup victory over Birmingham, while he played every minute in Premier League 2 for the Under-21s. A deep-lying midfielder by trade, he often spent last season playing the hybrid role taken on by Ricardo Pereira in the first team, moving from full-back to the centre of the pitch when City had possession. With Abdul Fatawu to be confirmed, and with five internationals – Mads Hermansen, Jannik Vestergaard, Wout Faes, Victor Kristiansen, and Bobby De Cordova-Reid – still to come into the squad, the number of players under consideration by Cooper will rise to 33, unless he starts to whittle them down. The manager will need to create space for new players too, with City still requiring signings, not least in attacking midfield. For the likes of Okoli and fellow new signing Michael Golding, the trip also offers a chance to bond with team-mates. For that reason and a few more, it’s valuable, defender Conor Coady believes. He told the club ahead of the trip: “Evian comes with its challenges because of how hard pre-season is. We all know it. We all understand it. I’ve had a lot of them in my career, pre-seasons. I love them each and every year. “It’s great to spend time with the lads, going somewhere like that. New lads come all the time and it’s important we incorporate them. It’s something we’re really looking forward to, and it’s a lovely place in a lovely part of the world as well.”
  10. Juventus reject Roma switch from Chiesa to Leicester target Soule ByApollo Heyes JUL 14, 2024 11:28 Juventus reject Roma switch from Chiesa to Leicester target Soule Roma have long been interested in Federico Chiesa but now have set their sights on Leicester City target Matias Soule, an idea rejected by Juventus. The Bianconeri are pushing to sell the talented Argentinian forward this summer as they’d make huge capital gains on a deal, allowing them to start focusing on their incoming market. He is valued at around €35-40m by the Old Lady. Leicester City have submitted an offer to Juventus for Soule, proposing a deal worth €25m plus €5m in add-ons, but this was turned down by the Bianconeri, who are holding out for a higher fee. In recent days, Roma have also emerged with a new strategy. Juventus no to Roma switch Page two of today’s Corriere dello Sport details how Roma have switched their interest in Chiesa to Soule, wanting to compete with Leicester for his signature, but Juventus have closed the door to the idea. The Old Lady want to sell the 21-year-old Argentine forward abroad and are open to negotiating with Leicester. In the meantime, they’d prefer the Giallorossi to return focus to Chiesa, whose future still needs to be determined.

Sources: Leicester in pole position to sign top Celtic ace, with transfer record under serious threat James Holland 1 hour ago Celtic duo Matt O'Riley and Kyogo Furuhashi with Leicester badge A Celtic ace has emerged as a key target for Leicester Leicester City are pushing to win the race for Celtic star Matt O’Riley amid rival interest from Atalanta, Everton and Southampton, TEAMtalk can reveal. O’Riley was born in London and came through the Fulham academy before going on to join MK Dons and then landing at Celtic in January 2022. The midfielder, who can play in any of the No 6, No 8 and No 10 roles, joined Celtic for an initial £1.5million in January 2022, and that transfer has proven to be a great piece of business. O’Riley has since made a name for himself as one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership and arguably Celtic’s most valuable star. They shoot, they score!!! Get 2 pizzas at Pizza Hut, any size for just £20! Better yet, we'll also throw in a 1.5L Pepsi Max **T&C's apply** The left-footed ace registered a hugely impressive 19 goals and 18 assists in 49 games for Celtic last term, helping the Hoops win a league and cup double. O’Riley thought he had done enough to force his way into the Denmark squad for Euro 2024, as he is eligible to represent them through his mother’s side, but the 23-year-old narrowly missed the cut. O’Riley has since decided that he wants to secure a big move this summer to put himself in the shop window more and ensure that he can become a crucial player for Denmark in the future. Atalanta have held several rounds of talks with Celtic over a possible deal, but Leicester have since barged into the chase.
  12. Leicester Memories Graham Hulme · 2 h · Old postcard view of Granby Street, looking towards London Road and the railway station in the distance. The card was posted from Kibworth Harcourt to an address in Fosse Road North at Leicester in February 1905. On the right of the picture the Barley Mow pub is seen at the corner of Calais Hill and appears to have roadworks in front of it. Wright’s directory of 1906 shows John Crouch as the licensee and he is shown as the proprietor there in the 1911 census when he was aged 57. Mr Crouch was born near Salisbury in 1853. The census shows his second wife, Clara, as resident with him, whom he married in Leicester in 1897 following the death of his first wife in 1893. His youngest daughter, Violet, aged 22, is also shown as resident, and two servants. John Crouch remained at the Barley Mow until his death there in September 1917, aged 64. His funeral took place at Welford Road Cemetery, attended by a large number of people. Local newspapers reported about it and gave a brief account of his life. He left home at a young age and served for some time as a butler to several wealthy and titled families - it was noted that on one occasion he waited upon King Edward VII (though this may have been before the king succeeded to the throne because Mr Crouch had moved to Leicester by 1883). He held the licence of the old Bow Bridge Inn (now demolished) at Leicester from the early 1880s to the 1890s and from the later 1890s he was the licensee of the old Saracen’s Head in Hotel Street until the early 1900s when it was rebuilt (now the Knight & Garter) and he then moved to the Barley Mow. A little further up from the Barley Mow, beyond the smaller building, stands the Victoria Hotel, next to the YMCA building. The hotel was built about 1870 to meet the growing demands of Leicester's expansion at that time, particularly brought about by the ever increasing use of the railways for business travel and tourism, and was designed by the Leicester architect James Bird (1815-84) in an Italianate style. The establishment had many names changes over the last fifty or sixty years of its life, including being called the King’s Head and the Wyvern and was popularly known as the Dirty Duck in the 1970s. It was lastly known as The Road before being closed and converted to a Sainsbury’s Local store a few years ago.

On Friday, Gazzetta dello Sport reported the Foxes are ready to make a written offer of €25m plus €5m bonuses for the winger. This is relayed in Saturday’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport, who then share more updates on Leicester’s pursuit of the 21-year-old. Soulé has returned to the Serie A side after spending last season on loan Frosinone, where he managed 11 goals and three assists from 36 league games. He’s unlikely to stay at the Turin club, and Steve Cooper’s side want to secure his services this summer. It’s claimed the Argentina U21 international ‘says yes’ to Leicester, and they need to find an agreement with the Old Lady, who are ready to sanction his sale. Leicester are ready to make a formal proposal of €25m plus €5m bonuses, which hasn’t convinced Juve. The newspaper says the deal can be concluded if they were to raise their bid to €30m excluding bonuses. The Foxes will move decisively to secure this impressive signing and all that’s remaining is for them agree a deal with Juve to bring Soulé to England. https://sportwitness.co.uk/suggestion-player-reverse-decision-join-leicester-city-getting-bit-messy/ Suggestion player could reverse decision to join Leicester City – Getting a bit messy By Sean Lunt - 13th July 2024 SHARE Mere hours after Juventus youngster Matias Soulé appeared to have decided on a move to Leicester City, he may now have reversed that choice. That’s at least according to journalist Gianluca di Marzio, who report that the youngster may be in two minds about what to do. Di Marzio reports that Soulé is among the most sought-after names in the Juventus squad at this moment in time and the two main interested parties are Leicester City and Roma. The Argentine has been made aware that De Rossi is ‘crazy about him’ and if he were to be forced to choose between the two destinations, he would choose Rome. Leicester have so far offered €20m plus €5m in bonuses, a figure that is still short of the €30m that Juventus are looking for. Roma would be willing to pay that price, though. This could end up turning the player’s head, with him preferring the move to Rome at this moment in time. That’s something of a dramatic turn for Leicester, with a report earlier today indicating he had given his yes to the Foxes and they were now pushing ahead to try and sign him up. In truth, the matter all appears to be getting a little messy, with Soulé’s head seemingly on a swivel as the various offers come in for him.

  16. While he may have retired from professional football, Anthony Knockaert has not decided to fully hang the boots up just yet. The mercurial winger will play next season in the lower reaches of Belgian football with Mouscron, the phoenix club of the now defunct Royal Excelsior Mouscron. Stade Mouscronnois were formed in 2022 to ensure that the town would still have a football team and currently plays in the lower reaches of the Belgian football pyramid. The former side went out of business in 2022 after being relegated from the Pro League the previous season. Knockaert, from just across the border in Roubaix, trained with Mouscron as a youngster before joining the Guingamp youth system. He went on the play for Leicester and Brighton, where he had the biggest impact. He did also play for half a season with Standard Liege, his only time in Belgian football. Last year he left Fulham to play in the French second tier with Valenciennes FC, who were subsequently relegated to the third tier of French football. After retiring, he returns to the side where he started playing football. GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson
