davieG Posted 3 April 2015 Posted 3 April 2015 A busy Leicester road is to be closed for nearly three weeks so speed humps can be installed. Highways engineers are to shut Middleton Street in Aylestone from April 8 to April 26. The route is well used by drivers trying to get between Narborough Road to Aylestone Road will have traffic calming installed after concerns about the speed of vehicles. Official say the route will remain open for 999 vehicles but diversions will be in place for other motorists. However Aylestone Liberal Democrat ward councillor Nigel Porter warned the closure would cause massive disruption. He said: "The council knows how bad this will be because that road floods and that causes chaos." The work is being done as part of an £82,000 project to make roads in Aylestone 20mph speed limited. Coun Porter has called on the council to suspend the nearby bus lanes on Aylestone Road while the work is being carried out to increase traffic capacity. The council has declined to relax the restrictions but will alter traffic signals to improve the flow. A spokeswoman said: "The area is the latest in a programme of citywide 20mph zones supported by local residents, in order to help reduce the numbers and severity of road accidents, and encourage more cycling and walking. "The Aylestone Village scheme includes a 20mph zone covering a section of roads to the west of the A426 Lutterworth Road/Aylestone Road, in a bid to cut accidents and stop the area being used as a rat run by motorists avoiding the Aylestone Road/Middleton Street junction. The council says the scheme follows work by local residents and businesses, ward councillors, MPs, the emergency services and Granby Primary School. Coun Porter said he had been against the speed cushions "from the start." Labour ward councillor Adam Clarke said: "There will be some disruption because it is a busy road. "I don't think it has to be a total closure. I've written to officers asking them if work can be restricted to outside peak hours and not at all on football and rugby match days when we get more traffic. "Putting this traffic calming in is important. It is what residents want and if it saves just one live it will be worth it. If Nigel doesn't see that it is a pity." DennisNedry Posted 3 April 2015 Posted 3 April 2015 The Soar Valley Way junction will be even more horrendous in rush hour then. Great.
Guest Col city fan Posted 3 April 2015 Posted 3 April 2015 The Soar Valley Way junction will be even more horrendous in rush hour then. Great. Oh God...
Donut Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 The Soar Valley Way junction will be even more horrendous in rush hour then. Great. Is it possible that Soar Valley Way could get more horrendous?
Soar Fox Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 You can't even build up enough speed when driving on Middleton street.
Guest Bob Hazels shorts Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 If soar valley way was improved this road would not be necessary, I often sit in that silly bottle neck on Lutterworth road thinking that Middleton should at least just be one way.
Rincewind Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 More cuts to services then to pay for it.. Well done Soulsby.
Jimothy Posted 4 April 2015 Posted 4 April 2015 More cuts to services then. Well done Soulsby. What the **** are on about? This is about speed bumps being put on a busy road, nothing to do with cuts to services.
ADK Posted 6 April 2015 Posted 6 April 2015 Can't stand speed humps, they damage your car and massively increase pollution by forcing you to speed up and then brake to make progress. Or if you can afford an SUV you can drive over them at full speed anyway.
Rincewind Posted 7 April 2015 Posted 7 April 2015 waste of money. Could be spent on things that benefit the community.
Grewks Posted 7 April 2015 Posted 7 April 2015 Why can't they try this? 1. Install Speed cameras 2. Fine all speeders 3. Use the money from fines to pay costs of initial implementation of speed camera. 4.If speeding is still an issue, represented by the number of fines, add speed bumps and remove camera. 5. If the fines do not merit an amount which makes speed bumps financially viable, keep the camera and don't add the bumps.
ADK Posted 7 April 2015 Posted 7 April 2015 Probably because 20 zones aren't easy to enforce so it's easier to just put obstacles in the road.
davieG Posted 8 April 2015 Author Posted 8 April 2015 Now postponed until the summer. ......until after the May elections
