couple of questions

Recommended Posts

can gerrbrand play left back, we've tried maybury and gilbert and they aint fantastic at left back. we should try maybury right back centre johansson, macarthy and gerrbrand and take it from there. next question does anyone like tiatto has a player, i really don't see wot he adds to our team and wud like to see us sign james macfadden on loan from everton in january. be great having a midfield of sylla, hughes, williams and macfadden. seeing that i've named my prefered back four and midfield i wud like hume and hammond together upfront.

And gerrbrand is crippled at the moment.

Just play Sheehan at left back, stick to playing players in their natural positions really. If Stearman isn't moved to centre back then i'd just drop Maybury, not made a good start and he's not a left back.

McFadden would be nice but i think the only players premiership clubs would be willing to loan out would be youngsters, McFadden is still on the fringes of Everton's first team and i don't think they'd risk loaning him out in the knowledge that they could get someone injured and be unable to get anyone in themselves.

So no Kris Commons then?

I certainly agree with playing people in their proper positions. By all means teach them alternative positions in training/reserve matches but until they gain some competence it is silly to make do when there are specialists available.

Clearly, for whatever reason, Levein does not seem happy that Sheehan is the answer at left back. Tiatto is injured so that's not an option, Maybury doesn't look right there and yet it is a shame to waste his capabilities at right back.

Given the conundrum therefore, I'd give Stearman a chance at centre-back, have Maybury at right-back and Nils at left-back. Levein has the choice then of Dublin or McCarthy as the alternative centre-back. There is a case for either. McCarthy, because he represents the future, or Dublin because he's an attacking defender, (as is Spearman) which, with MDV presumably leading the line would give us a decent presence height-wise at set-pieces either end.

This is not saying I don't agree with Levein that it's perhaps premature for Stearman to play centre-back but we've been shaky there anyway so I see no reason why it would be worse (given we'd be playing our most natural available left-back and retaining the speed/competence of Maybury.

Are there any better solutions from the available players?. I've not mentioned Gilbert cos he just doesn't convince me.

On the subject of left backs, Johannson played there all last season for blackburn and looked solid.

He didn't play there all last season, although he did play a number of games in that position.
