davieG Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Business owners in Narborough Road are set to hit national television screens this week as part of Channel 4's mission to promote diversity. TV producers have filmed 21 people from the road as they introduce peak-time programmes, from The Simpsons and Everybody Loves Raymond, to Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares and even the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix this Saturday. Producers from the show decided to film the business owners after spotting the Leicester Mercury's article about Narborough Road being the most diverse in the country with at least 22 nations represented. Directors Barry Dyer and John Allison were responsible for filming and putting the scenes together at among others, Tin Drum Books, Al Madina and Yesim restaurants. Both Barry and John hail from Leicester originally. Barry said: "I grew up in Saffron Lane and went to the old Rowley Fields School. It was John's mum who spotted the article in the Mercury and when she showed it to us we thought it would be the perfect place to come and fulfill our remit as being a diverse channel because the street itself is so diverse. "It's been a pleasure to be here as part of this. Obviously I still come back to Leicester to see family but I'm seeing another side I hadn't before. There's a very genuine spirit down here with lots of aspirational business owners it's been great to meet." Kurdish born Ufuk Gundogdu owns Yesim in Narborough Road - a cafe and grill meze restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine. He said: "It's been really interesting to be part of this. Filming took quite some time - more than I thought it would - but it was fun. I work in Narborough Road and I live nearby and I like that there are so many different people here. I think we're part of one big community." Yesim is the first of the shopkeepers to be aired on Saturday at 11.55am as he introduces the Hungarian Grand Prix. The rest will be shown throughout the week. Behind the scenes footage of filming will also be put on YouTube by Channel 4. Thracian Posted 21 July 2016 Posted 21 July 2016 Anyone who lived near on or near Narborough Road in the 60s, like my grandparents, would be horrified at the place it's become. Nothing wrong with the diversity aspect whatsoever in terms of variety of shops, a much varied choice of restaurants including some which are half-decent, the wholesale developmental improvements around the old Black Pad area to make it university friendly but with benefits to the general community. It's the undercurrent that's the changed. Only this last week one guy was murdered in Braunstone Gate but there have been all sorts of incidents, people killed, murdered, premises blown up, any amount of anti-social and noise disturbance and a whole stack of underworld crime that has changed the whole atmosphere of the place. A guy seconded to crime investigation told me a couple of years back that he was actually scared of cases ending up in court and his having to give evidence due to the likely consequences and his quite serious belief that he'd have to move out of the area. Channel 4 might have an agenda to promote but what happened to genuine investigative journalism - and the truth of it?.

I live on Narborough road and the 'atmosphere' is generally absolutley sound. People get along fine. Yes there is the odd incident, the 'premises blown up' was like five years ago. Id much rather live here than in the suburbs. I work in Huncote and theres 100% more bell ends in the pubs there than most bars on the Narb.
