Why do third world countries remain underdeveloped?

Some people might argue we're poorer in influence than we were a few decades back, but that's another discussion.

I've no disagreement that trade does help countries get richer (having a key resource helps), but how do you explain that these countries are poor and remain poor? I'm reasonably sure it's not all down to their own leadership errors, not when it's a matter of record that the Great Powers like to play politics in those regions.

Part of it is the way we divided up Africa, in a way didn't take into account the different tribal areas. That's caused unnecessary trouble for years, but that wasn't done to keep these areas poor, when it was done we never considered that we wouldn't be running those countries eventually. The main reason though is corruption and incompetence  by the people who run these countries.

lots of reasons, a lack of a working government  civil war, corruption and a lot of the money spent on foreign aid not going where it is needed most. and a scewed trading agreements which favour western governments and politicians
