Leicester City set for 6 games in 17 days in Christmas 2017 schedule

The Premier League's Christmas schedule will be even more hectic next season, according to Leicester City icon Gary Lineker.

City have just completed two fixtures in three days – described as "crazy" by Claudio Ranieri – but the club could face six games in just 17 days over the 2017 festive period.

According to City legend Lineker, in a schedule he believes is "utterly bonkers", Premier League clubs will play on December 16, 20, 23, 26, 30 and New Year's Day next season, allowing for an average of two days' rest between each fixture.

With the World Cup in Russia at the end of the 2017-18 season, English league fixtures are likely to be crammed to allow for an earlier finish to the campaign.

It would likely draw criticism from Ranieri after City's punishing schedule this year.

Just 167.5 hours passed between kick-off on their Boxing Day defeat to Everton and the final whistle of their goalless draw against Middlesbrough, with only Liverpool (143.75) and Southampton (117) suffering shorter turnarounds.

City's game at the Riverside kicked off just 43.5 hours after the conclusion of their 1-0 win over West Ham, prompting irritation from Ranieri.

"Some people play after three or four recovery days, but you can't recover in just one day," the City boss said.

"It's a little crazy but that's English football."

For the players, a hectic schedule is unlikely to cause too much fuss, with midfielder Andy King claiming players prefer to play than train.

"It is tough and we have seen some managers say they are not too happy about it because of the health of the players, but that is football," said the Welshman, who made his 350th City appearance against Middlesbrough.

"We are professional athletes and we want to get on with it. It is nice to play. You would rather play as many games as you can rather than train for 10 days and not have a game."

I enjoy football over the festive period so I'll personally look forward to it.

Teams now have 25 man squads so they should be able to cope with the busy schedule.

Plus, it is more or less the same for everyone (unless one team is plagued by injuries and the same XI play every game, that would be bad luck).

The players can use their many pound notes to get some nice muscles massages and sit in a hot tub for a bit.. They'll be fine.
