We found him in a hospital, partially sighted, his body barely able to fight his skin cancer. "There are people here worse than me," he says. We visited a sex health clinic, where Ian was having his first-ever test. The last girl he had sex with "sleeps around a bit", he said. He was too drunk to use a condom, so he had to come here. He's lucky to have made it without too long a wait. Doctors say people should be seen within 48 hours of having unprotected sex. That's what the Government wants to achieve within three years, but the current reality is entirely different. Every sex health clinic in UK (there are 260) was phoned by researchers, who posed as worried people seeking an appointment. Some clinics had a waiting list of a week. With others, it was more like six. One of them advised a researcher to write to their MP - but in doing so, highlighted the most tragic problem of all. Patients are usually too ashamed of their STIs to ever stand up and be heard.

All those potential geniuses, high-achievers and world-beaters unable to reproduce. Oh well. Our loss. Unless you are wretchedly unlucky enough to be the victim of a forced act, there really isn't a single decent excuse for not practising safe sex.
