My only amendment to this would be "competing to qualify to" Europe, instead of making it every year.  The likes of Everton in particular will be unreasonable to finish on top of every season in my opinion.

Ah but I think our club is aiming to actually lock it down rather than just compete. The Premier League and Champions League are much harder to compete for, but I see our aim as being the English Sevilla, who are always in Europe and sometimes in the Champions League, but never really challenge for the title.

We aren't there yet, but I think that's the aim. And it's challenging because there's not much to choose between ourselves, Everton, Wolves, Watford and West Ham as the league table showed.

2020 - FA cup win

2021 - Champions League final

2022 - Championship

2023 - League 1

2024 - Pearson returns to gain promotion to complete the circle

Wait how can we win the championship and the win league 1 the next seasons unless you mean the Scottish league cos only God knows how that league works :P

Looking at both sides on paper, maybe Aubameyang apart I really don't see Arsenal as all that much better.  If reports are true and they have only £40m to spend this summer then with some decent purchases Leicester should be aiming to go after them imo.

Oh we could in theory finish above them next season, sure. I just think that Arsenal's owner, Kroenke, knows that he has to do the bare minimum to maintain Top 6, so if we managed to finish above them, he would actually give them a proper budget the following season.

We would have a similarly catalysing reaction on any Top 6 team's spending if we finished above them, bar maybe Tottenham who aren't actually sitting on a massive fund like the other 5. This makes consistent Top 6 finishes in the years to come virtually impossible as we can't keep up financially - as soon as we get a leg up on one team, they will panic and pull away again.

This is why I think that apart from isolated circumstances, finishing in the Top 6 in the next ten-twenty years will not be something we can expect to do. It's not the end of the world however, there are still plentiful routes to Europa and the FA Cup to compete in whilst we grow our brand, academy, support (both domestic and foreign) which would give us a genuine platform to compete with the Top 6 hopefully in a couple decades.

I absolutely agree, that is the longterm aim. I think it might be a big ask to achieve in 5 years, that's all, as I can see few ways to establish ourselves over the likes of Everton comfortably. Then again, a lot can happen in 5 years of football, one need only look back 5 years to know that.

With an open top bus parade in each of those seasons
