davieG Posted 28 October 2005 Posted 28 October 2005 I've played about 5 times at Gartree Prison 2 'home' and 2 away league games plus a 'home' cup game, and no I wasn't playing for Gartree. Weird sensation playing behind 3/4 sets of 30ft high barbed wire fencing, with prisoners watching but in no more than groups of 2, watched by the Wardens. Funny thing was getting egged on by some of the prisoners to get stuck into one or two of their players. This was in the late 60's just after it was built, fabulous facilities they had better than anything I'd come across. I honestly can't remember the scores, I'm guessing they won as they use to win the league regularly, playing all their games at home I think it's a maximum security prison now, does anyone know if they still put out a team?
Durnerz Posted 28 October 2005 Posted 28 October 2005 Our pitch used to be next to a main train line with no fencing to shield balls from going on the tracks, and as luck would have it I played at right back. On the Train track side! so the poor opposition lads who had to grab the ball off the lines after one of my clearances weren't best pleased!

Not sure if it's gartree, but my friend tells me he's played several times against prisoners here in Leicester. He told me how they are all made to leave all their possessions behind (including mobile phones, which I guess you guys did not have in the 1960s ). He also commented on the rather peculiar atmosphere... I forgot to ask him who won
City Fan Posted 30 October 2005 Posted 30 October 2005 Wasn't a proper match but have had a kickaround on a desert, watched by camels and the like....

Hullfox Posted 30 October 2005 Posted 30 October 2005 Used to play for Carlton Hayes when it was a mental hospital, the home support were awesome. Also played on a French motorway in a massive traffic jam.
Thracian Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 In photographer Casper Fleischmann's office in Zurich, Switzerland. Casper had an English sheepdog, massive thing, who (after Banks and Shilton) was the best goalkeeper I ever saw. It would crouch between an open double door and not move a muscle as you stood behind a tennis ball and pretended to shoot. Honestly it never moved and never blinked. Then when you shot, out would pop a monstrous paw and he'd palm it round the post or, if the ball was close, he'd just grab it in his teeth. Practised for hours did the dog and it really was hard to score against him. Then he'd watch his owner play squash from the balcony above the court. Untethered and all on its own he would watch every rally, moving his head from side to side and up and down - never wavering from the flight of the ball. Wouldn't be surprised if it's qualified as a referee by now.

Phil Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 I've played in a hotel at 3 am in the morning slightly drunk running along the corridors yelling "Phils on the ball round the bin knocks on a door shoots and hits the wall" then some slightly annoyed German people had a go at us luckily I wasn't staying in that hotel! but my mates got a right bollolking for it.
IDEA OR IKEA Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 Played in the coach bay of the channel tunnel train on route to France (our coach vs some Italians!), its amazing how it does not matter if its grass or metal they still spent half the game rolling around on it!
Phil Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 Played in the coach bay of the channel tunnel train on route to France (our coach vs some Italians!), its amazing how it does not matter if its grass or metal they still spent half the game rolling around on it! that reminds me of a few years back on a school trip, we were on the channel tunnel going to a small market town in Germany for a day trip thing. anyhoo me and a few mates decided to venture up the train until we came a across a coach from Portsmoth. Remebering that we'd have to play Portsmouth in a couple weeks time and one of my mates being a southampton fan we decided to wake this coach of kids also our age (we were about 15 at the time) up so starting singing soton songs and some very anti-portsmoth songs. well they woke up and luckily saw the funny side of it and we ended up having a bit of a rough kick about for a couple of minutes until one my mates and this lad from Portsmoth had a bit of a scuffle nothing major and we decided to walk off but my mate yelled c**t as we left thinking we'd never see them again..... however we pull into this carpark in Germany and who should turn up 10 minutes later, only our mates from the south coast and we ended up spending the whole day trying to avoid them. like any of you really wanted to know that mind!
