foxes_fan Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 Just went in today. "Buy one get one free on DVDs" - they had a whole section devoted to this. Sounds pretty good yeah? Well it isn't all as it seems, they've just used crafty marketing techniques to short change the customer. Luckily I wasn't fooled by this offer, mainly because I was clued up from visiting the store two weeks ago. Sprited Away - £8.99 Today: - Spirited Away - £19.99 (BOGOF) So if you purchased two DVD's two weeks ago (at £8.99 each), you'd have to pay £17.98. That means todays buyers are giving an extra £2.02 to pay the frankly rubbish employees wages. Cheeky.
Parsons Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 they cant be that bad....... thery're top dogs for music

Alexikokopops Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 Somehow i don't think that's the point being made. Well it's not a very valid point otherwise. He's using one example of the same DVD, I've managed to get a lot of excellent bargains in the BOGOF offers at HMV on DVDs, like the Goodfellas Special Edition and the Schindler's List Special Edition, £15 for the both of them.
Northants Fox Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 The way i see it the point being made here is that two DVD's two weeks ago were £8.99 each, and would cost £17.98 for two, but now it's on offer as a BOGOF, but the DVD in question is now £19.99 so they are now making a profit of £2.02 compared to a fortnight ago. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Correct me if i'm wrong. I think you are correct, actually. Was that particular DVD on some kind of offer two weeks ago? Unless we are talking different editions, it really sounds like they are making an extra £2.02 now...
Nationwider Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 I don't normally frequent His Master's Voice, but having got Supergrass Greatest Hits and Donnie Darko DVD for a tenner last week, they're in my good books.

Cool!!! I could do with "Supergrass Greatest Hits" myself... How much was that? I wonder if the price has stayed the same or whether it's gone up!!!
Nationwider Posted 31 October 2005 Posted 31 October 2005 Cool!!! I could do with "Supergrass Greatest Hits" myself... How much was that? I wonder if the price has stayed the same or whether it's gone up!!! I got it for £5.99 and Donnie Darko for £3.99. To be honest, HMV's 365-day sale is just one big weird jumble sale. Nothing's ever priced the exactly same in every store, so you just have to spend a few minutes browsing....and try not to make too many impulse purchases on your lunch hour.

Well said - its like they have a perminant sale. Myself, if you need anything not in the charts/alternative etc. vsist HMV anything chart wise Tescos are the best!

MC Prussian Posted 2 November 2005 Posted 2 November 2005 Hmm... Cannot tell much about the HMV in Great Britain, but the one that just opened a month ago here in Vancouver has some really decent deals. 2 for 30 DVDs, 3 for 30 DVDs, 2 for 25 CDs... I bought Collateral, Hotel Rwanda, American History X, American Beauty, Reservoir Dogs, Lost In Translation, Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels and L.A. Confidential there... 120 Dollars for 8 quality movies... that's 15 Dollars each!

MC Prussian Posted 2 November 2005 Posted 2 November 2005 Doesn't sound that cheap to me! Considering that there's a couple of added features and Bonus-DVDs that come along with the movies, it is pretty cheap. I'd pay about double that price would I buy those movies one by one.
Phil Posted 2 November 2005 Posted 2 November 2005 I worked at a well known retailer changing the prices and whenever a product was going onto a bogof sort of offer the price would increase slightly a week or so before the offer came into action.
Katy Posted 2 November 2005 Posted 2 November 2005 I worked at a well known retailer changing the prices and whenever a product was going onto a bogof sort of offer the price would increase slightly a week or so before the offer came into action. Saucy sods!

When I eventually do buy them, it is only to find out that - a month or so later - they are available even cheaper
Alexikokopops Posted 3 November 2005 Posted 3 November 2005 My thoughts exactly . They're well depressing, make me want to die Hmm... When I went to Canada there were some good deals in the Virgin in Vancouver.

reynard Posted 3 November 2005 Posted 3 November 2005 HMV are terrible. The only way they can offer deals like this is by screwing the suppliers so hard and by probably forcing them to pay for titles to be promoted. If you want any specialist non chart cd then forget them. they are almost always more expensive than any half decent independent music store. Also it always the same "greatest sale ever" approach every week. They do nothing to support independent musicians.Bands playing local gigs will not be able to get their cds into the local stores. IMO they are just another example of the homogenised centralised retailer that inhabits out high street.
