Old Habits die hard...

What I have to say,and its as not been all season,in fact I thought, under Puel, then more so under Rodgers..that we had improved ....

I am usually the last to Chase down negatives, but our onfield management was poor

Our defending on Standard situations, has again  come into question....

AVillas..winning goal,the 2 goals today,were downright poor,defending....

Where were our Two experienced players, when it mattered, Marshalling the defence.  Forget the last contact,or last defender floundering...The Set ups,and who marked who,

then the Positioning before a ball was even kicked seems to be lacking...

Why werent Goalkeeper & Evans delibrately taking control, and seeing  being more deliberate in the marshalling of THEIR defence..!!!

I thought in Open play, our defence, was ok and even got stronger. Though there is nothing wrong from playing from the back, we are too slow, too obvious, laxadasical

with no intent or commitment, when pinging the ball around the bline....No runners,or runners not seen..Like Perez,or Barnes,

who sometimes made themselves Space or available...

Fans at the ground, would See it better,or the the all round view, and players taking leading Rolls at Standard situations???...because I seem to be missing it at the moment!!!

Like I said, firstly its onfield-management, but eventually ,the Coaching staff and manager must intervene.

I certainly saw Evans organising the defence at several set-pieces. Exactly who was at fault for the 2 goals, I'm not sure. I'll be interested to see again on MOTD.

The marking certainly looked terrible for their 2nd goal, Rudiger was completely free; seemed to just get higher than our defenders for the first.

Not sure if Kasper could or should have come out for either or both....possibly, but if not, surely he should have been able to back-pedal more quickly to get the 2nd....maybe an illusion but it seemed to take ages to go over him & into net.

There was a bit more passing around the backline than usual today, but I actually think it might have been a good & deliberate tactic.

Several times, we passed it around at the back, drew Chelsea players onto us & then engineered fast counter-attacks through accurate longer balls out of defence.....maybe Brendan thought Chelsea were vulnerable to that?

I thought Perez was excellent today - caused Chelsea a lot of problems, finding space, overlapping, linking play, making little sinewy runs past defenders. MoM in my view.

Barnes was a bit patchy, but very good during the good bits. We really grew into the game and were unlucky not to win in the end (having been 2nd best for the first half-hour).

Players won't decide on field in the moment who's marking who. Rodgers' sets us up the way he does, which obviously works as we've conceded very few from set pieces, and that's that. We would have gone through all this in the build up to the game and today it obviously didn't work.

Personally it doesn't make sense for me. When you've got someone as big and strong as Rudiger surely Rodgers should have changed it up and said to Evans/Soyuncu to man mark.
