Wright keen to please - and get his chance

Tommy Wright is hoping for another taste of the big time tomorrow when City square up to Sheffield United at the Walkers Stadium.

The 19-year-old striker was rewarded for his form in City's reserves, where he has netted three times in as many games so far this season, with a spot on the substitutes' bench at Rotherham.

It then got even better for the local lad when he replaced scorer Dion Dublin for the final 10 minutes of the encounter at Millmoor.

"My inclusion came as a bit of a shock although Peter Shirtliff (reserve-team boss) did have a word with me the other day and told me that he had recommended to Micky Adams that I should be considered for the first-team squad," said Wright who has now made 15 appearances for City - 13 as a substitute - since his debut against Leeds in March 2002.

"The manager also told me the other day how well I had been doing and said it wouldn't be long before I got a chance.

"But, while I was determined to make an impression this season, I knew it was going to be difficult with so many good strikers at the club. I couldn't take anything for granted."

But that chance came at the weekend and Wright, who spent last season on loan at Brentford, is now hoping he has done enough to warrant another opportunity against the Blades.

"I thought I did all right when I went on," he said. "I had a couple of decent touches and chased after all the balls that came my way.

"Hopefully I will be involved in some capacity again tomorrow night when we will be in front of our own fans.

"It is a massive game for us because we need to sort our home record out sooner rather than later.

"We owe the fans a win and a performance tomorrow."

Anyone care to tell me these "so many good strikers" we have at the club are? :w00t:

he will play youngsters when they are showing progress and doing well like wright and heath.

It's great to see Wrighty given a chance and he deserves his chance. We all say Adams doesn't like the youngsters but he's a fair man. Fair enough, he doesn't throw loads of them in like some clubs do, but Wright has done well for the reserves and been rewarded with a chance. That's how it should be, Micky needs to be prepared to take a gamble more than he does. As the likes of Dawson and Stearman are awesome for the reserves and with certain players in our first team looking awful (Dabizas, Heath, Wilcox, etc) then it's only fair they are given a chance to ply their trade.

Hmmm, that's odd! Stearman played regularly in the reserves at the back end of last season aswell as this season and whenever i've seen him play he has been class. He also won Young Player of The Year Award ahead of the likes of Heath, Stewart and all the reserve lads. You don't win that at 16 if your not doing things right. He was immense in pre-season according to reports with a run from his own box all the way in to the oppositions and scoring, now fair enough Dawson has looked the business this season but I also think Stearman is an exceptional talent and even Micky has said he's the most exciting youngster he's ever worked with.

I've been to watch the reserves this season twice, Dawson and Stearman have been very impressive, so I'm not sure how Maddog can make that claim about Stearman, unless he's gone down there to watch them himself.
