50 years ago today I supported Brazil !!

 

The 1970 World cup was my introduction to football on our telly.

After realisation set in that we could not just pop out & watch Brazil I nagged my Dad to take me to watch Leicester City as I knew this would be my only chance of going to a game.

So, on November 14th 1970 my Dad took me to Filbert Street for the first time,  to see City v Swindon.

I don't remember too much about the game itself, though we won 3-1 but what is still clear is the anticipation I felt climbing the stairs to the decker & the excitement of being in a big crowd for the first time, all willing Leicester to win.

Thus began a lifelong obsession with Leicester City F.C. & I have, honestly, loved every moment.

The highs are obvious, the 2015-16 season & the subsequent European campaign & the Bloomfield & O'Neill years were also pretty special.

The relegations, notably 1978 & 2008 were horrible but all part of supporting my rollercosster of a team.

From Bloomfields entertainers & Jocks young guns, through the hooligan years of the 80s, the resurgance of the 90s, the uncertain & largely pretty dismal noughties & the unbelievable past decade Leicester City have given me a reason to look forward to the weekend all through the football season for half a century.

Obviously the past 9 months have been awful & like everyone my happy routine has been seriously upset but there are more things to life than football & I honestly believe things will be near normal a year or so from now.

Here's to the next 50 years (no chance) but looking forward with optimism to the near future.

 

Top of the league & in European competition, long may it continue.

 

and I still like Brazil ! (a bit)

By coincidence the Swindon match was my first match as well. Sat in the double decker. My dad who died earlier this year took me and did so for a number of years after. So began a lifetime of supporting the city.

 

My memory of the game is being held up to look at the swaying kop below!

Really enjoy hearing these stories. My Dad used to take me to sit on an old dugout at the front of the Kop (I think it was Pen 4) starting from ‘83.

 

I’ve never lived in Leicester, but used to walk to Filbo from my Nan’s house just off Saffron Lane. Such good memories and I idolised players from some good eras like Lineker, Ramsey, Newell, McAllister, Reid, Mills, Thompson, Joachim etc 

 

Walsh and Izzet come close but my all time favourite is Vards. I’ve always loved watching City, but my enthusiasm dropped a bit in the mid-2000’s as I was playing myself and my old man was living abroad.

 

It soon picked up again when my Dad moved home and I still travel up with my Dad to watch from London. I was there against Villa the last night before the stadiums were locked down to see Vards come on and grab a couple of goals.

 

its amazing how many great memories the football gives us - I’m laid up in bed with Covid at the moment - but I know I’ll be back watching in 2021 and this current side is the best I’ve seen by far! Up the Citeh
