Levein on Leeds Defeat

Leeds United's second goal and what happened afterwards were the main talking points of the post match press conference at Elland Road on Saturday evening.

A goal from David Healy towards the end of the first half had given the home side the lead at the break, but City would draw level on 68 minutes when Joey Gudjonsson converted from the penalty spot.

But Leeds would grab the winner four minutes later through Matthew Kilgallon in controversial circumstances, and Leicester defender Paddy McCarthy would see red in the aftermath.

Speaking after the encounter, Levein said: "At the time their second goal looked off side. The ball was struck from just outside the penalty area and it hit a player who was stood right in the middle of the six-yard box. I don't understand for a second how anyone can say he wasn't interfering with play, if that was actually the decision that was taken. It has hit him and it has deflected past Rab Douglas.

"I am not condoning at all what Patrick McCarthy did. It was wrong to go running towards the linesman. The referee has reacted to something he has said and he deserves to go if that is the case. I have no complaints whatsoever with that.

"But the whole thing comes about because the linesman has made a big mistake and it has cost us.

"That goal changed the game. They had a little spell, but we were comfortable and we didn't have any problems. I thought that we played most of the game in their half and we have played some good stuff.

"It was a turning point. They got a goal that shouldn't have been a goal and it took us down to ten men. But I must credit my players for their undoubted effort in the last 15 minutes of the game. I thought that we battered them for that period. We had good chances to score and we didn't take them.

"Paddy will get fined and he has no excuses. I don't know if we would have got back into the match with 11 men, but we might have done and it is certainly more difficult to do so with 10.

"He is improving as a player week in week out. Up until that point I thought he had a fantastic game and as long as he learns from it then maybe it will be something that improves him as a player.

"We didn't defend properly for their first goal. We were naïve. We should be thinking about what might happen instead of standing and watching. We should have reacted to the touch.

"I think we have played well of late, but again our problem today was converting chances."

He was, of course, going to work and work in training on converting chances. Presumably that would also mean free-kicks. There doesn't seem to be any drastic improvement.

I actually feel for Levein cos I think he was trying to do the right things. He's just got to think "effect" when making his team selections and that will probably be enough to swing the balance in his favour.

With this in mind next up I'd go:

Douglas;

Maybury, Gerrbrand, Dion, Sheehan;

Stearman, Kisnobo, Joey,

--------------------------------Smith;

Hammond, Hume.

Subs: Nils, Tiatto, Sylla, MDV Hammill.

The team has pace, passing ability, movement, partnerships and plays everyone in a natural position. There are no obvious passengers and most players are capable of having an attacking effect.

I think Craig is spot on. We did play really well and were unfortunate not to take something from the game.

We played one the best teams in the championship today and could have won. I feel quite happy about the future and so should all of you.

I have to agree with what both you and Craig Levein said!!!! :thumbsup:

Despite losing we looked a good side,conceding to two sucker punches from a team we outplayed.We MUST improve our offensive set pieces but otherwise just bring Nils in and leave the rest of the side to gell together.

Nils in??

I dont relly like To defensive midfielders playing, oit too negative and as they say, the best form of defence is attack. Sure, we would concede more but we would also score more

I still don't know why we are still conceding from set pieces...

That should not be happening!

No, but they are always difficult to deal with especially if someone's given some thought to em. Leeds get a handful of attacking free-kicks (net twice). We get a bagful and never go close. Something's wrong - and this particular thing has been wrong for ages.

Hughes has a thigh injury that might keep him out for a while and Williams has an ongoing back injury so it seems like we'll have to play with two defensive central midfielders for now. That said, when Joey plays with Paddy he plays a more attacking role and has gotten into the box and started more attacking moves than I've seen either Williams or Hughes do this season.

i think the team needs to stay as it is now, obviously injuries and bans will occur and ruin the set up, but leiven has the right thing happening now!! but with the amount of chances we had today something should of happened, i feel we were unlucky!!!

From what I gathered from this game, I also think Levein's observations are correct.

I also like the way he's handling the Paddy red card. I hate it when players argue with officials. I doubt Paddy has ever seen a player argue with a ref or linesman and have the official overturn his decision, but I'm sure he's seen players get booked or sent off for it, so I don't know where he got the idea that voicing his dissent would have been a good thing.

They'll get these points back at Stoke.

Hmmm Paddy wants his arse fined for that, Ok it was offside we could even see that from where we were sitting but there was no need to go galloping over to the linesman, you would have thought he would have given up after the first yellow but oh no he carries on and gets a red! :mad:

We were unlucky I thought but the set piece thing is a worry, we cant take them and we cant defend them :(
