Keown back in contention?

Dave Bassett has today given his reaction to Micky Adams' shock resignation from the post of manager at the club.

Bassett took over the management reins at Filbert Street three-years ago before eventually passing on the baton to Adams six months later.

Adams went on to win City a place back in the Premiership at the first attempt against all the odds.

But relegation again followed and after 12 games of the Championship campaign Adams decided it was time to move on.

Bassett, who now steps in as caretaker manager, said: "It didn't exactly come out of the blue to me because obviously I have been speaking to Micky quite a lot for almost a week. He was very low last Tuesday after the Preston defeat. We spoke and at that time he was considering his situation. I think that it was important for him not to make a knee-jerk reaction and he looked at it overall.

"We talked long and hard over the week and sadly over the weekend he felt that the right decision was for him to resign.

"Everybody at the club wanted Micky to stay. There was no pressure on him and the board were not about to sack him. We all had belief in him but in the end Micky Adams didn't feel that it was quite right for him.

"Players are quite resilient but I think that they were surprised to find out this morning that Micky was going. But footballers look to the next situation and they will be looking to go out and do their business on the pitch. It is up to them and they have got to go out there and to start winning football matches.

"The players haven't played to their potential this season. For various games they have but not on a consistent basis. So that's why our results haven't been as good as we'd have wanted them to be.

"Micky has made the point that the results at the Walkers Stadium both last season and this haven't been what we wanted them to be. We have been quite good on our travels - even in the Premier League. But there seems to be an apprehension when we play at the Walkers Stadium and that players have got to put that behind them.

"I am caretaker manager and I am here to help Leicester City in the short term. Whether it goes on for any longer than that will be discussed at board level. We will look around for a manager and that is what I have got to help Leicester City to do. Meanwhile, I will get on with the job of getting results for the club to keep our momentum going because we want to be in the top echelon of the league at the end of the season.

"Assistant manager Alan Cork and goalkeeping coach Glan Latheran have gone and that is a decision that has been made by the board. I have been told that I can bring someone to help on a week-to-week basis - someone who is prepared to help the club - not on a permanent basis. Their situation would be exactly the same as mine. I have got a couple of possibilities. I have got to find someone who is in that position and doesn't mind taking the chance that it could be a very short-term thing.

"It is up to us now to find a manager that is able to take Leicester on again. We are going to take our time to make sure we get the right person because we don't want to end up bringing in a manager who is not up to the standard. I will be involved in that decision."

Bassett finally passed comment on the Martin Keown who was placed on the transfer list by the club a fortnight ago.

He added: "Martin Keown asked to speak to me today but I have been busy. I will have a chat with him tomorrow to see where he is coming from. It could possibly mean that if we are paying his wages and I think he can do a job for us then he will be up for selection."

Get him back in the side. :)

Brilliant get the mighty Kewon back in!

Bryan Robson or Mike Newell for manager!!

Keown is beautiful!! Get him back in that side, we need a leader like him, and give him the captains armband as well!

no thanks i dont want Keown. Heath and Dabizas are the way to go. If Keown doesnt listen to what he is told then he will only disrupt the team. From what i have seen of him he is well past it. No doubt ill get flamed for this but its my opinion :)

Now Alan Cork & Glan Latheran have left also ,who are we going to replace them with temporary ?

True , Hopefully he will recommend some good young players to Bassett

I agree that keown should be back in contention but I also think that dabidaz and Heath will be first choice. We also have to consider stearman and elliot so we have five central defenders.

Keown should definately play, he has been our best centre back in the games I have seen him play. Dabizas is not in the same leahgie and Heath is nothing but crap.

I think Keown should be back in contention, but Bassett must warn him not to meddle in management affairs. Stick to defending well and keep your gob shut.

Dabizas and Heath have been nothing short of shocking generally. Does anyone feel safe with those two at centreback?

Most centrebacks should be good in the air, Heath doesn't offer anything else apart from that.....

Dabizas is shocking all over. Bemuses me how he is captain because i can never see him controlling the team. Leading them and telling them what to do.

You said do you feel safe?..I said not atall. I wasn't contesting that statement in the least.

Eeeeeeeeeeeek!

Stop wanting Bryan Robson! You might get what you wish for and nobody apart from sadistic buggers want him as manager!

One of the worst managers the premiership has ever seen and he even had a cheque book to hide behind!

I really can't understand how anyone can justify Bryan Robson as their choice.

Caretaker manager Dave Bassett has confirmed that Martin Keown is available for selection when the Foxes take on Coventry City this Saturday.

Keown is currently on the transfer list at his own request and can leave the club on a free after joining Leicester from Arsenal over the close season.

The former England centre half started eight out of City's opening 10 Championship games of the campaign - but has not featured in the last three matches.

But Bassett confirmed that the 38-year-old defender is still training with the first team and could be included in the squad to face the Sky Blues this weekend.

He said: "Micky Adams told Martin Keown that if he didn't want to stay here he could have a free transfer. No club as yet has enquired about him so as far as I am concerned we get on with the job and see where we go.

"I haven't had a personal conversation with Martin, but I have told the players that if they have got any problems and they want to talk to me then they should knock on my door and I will be more than happy to have a chat.

"Martin hasn't knocked on my door yet. He trained on Monday and as long as Leicester City pay his wages them Martin will be considered for selection."

OS

Mixed news there really, at least he's available again....but I didn't realise he had requested to go on the transfer list, I thought Micky had stuck him on it.

Hopefully he'll get on with the new manager and come off the transfer list, we're far better defensively with him in the side.
