Louise Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 As everyone knows, Leicester City won the British Masters last year. At the time Ali Mauchlen said that he hoped they'd be allowed to represent City in Europe (The European Masters, as past winners have done), but was worried Leicester wouldn't be a big enough name. He was right. Apparently instead of City an International Team are being made up to compete. Now, as Sky finance this venture you can see their reasoning behind it, as of course all they're interested in is money. But it makes such a mockery of the whole British Masters and our ex-players achivements.
davieG Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 An absolute disgrace and yet again demonstrates the tail (sky) wagging the dog (the FA). Form filbertfoxy00 on the fox forum. Apparently Ali agrees with the decision!!! No, I don't believe it either. E-mail from LCFC: I have spoken to Ali Mauchlen. Leicester won the British Masters and in previous years the winner represented the UK in the European Masters. However Sky as the organisers and financers felt that Leicester would not attract sufficient interest for it to be cost effective, they have therefore decided to put forward an International Team instead which will sell better to the European market. Ali Mauchlen does not want the club to pursue any request to fight on their behalf as he is in agreement with the decision made by Sky and the Masters team will also be playing in this year’s tournament at the Nottingham Arena on 23rd June.
Guest Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 We might as well not bother taking part in the regional heats, where's the incentive?
Onion Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 what a load of shite I was looking forward to seeing our 'legends' take on European legends.
Phube Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 one word. disgusting. Well, what does it matter as long as they are 'representing' British football!!! Sorry couldn't resist Absolutely shocking!!
davieG Posted 26 April 2006 Posted 26 April 2006 Follow up from Filbertfoxy: t seems there was some confusion over this event. Apparently it has been delayed by a year to allow an International event to take place this year...see the reply from the organisers pasted below: Hi Paul Thanks for the email. I'm not sure where you got that information from but it's not correct. We planned to hold our second European Masters Cup this year, where Leicester would have joined one other UK side, probably Liverpool and two foreign club teams. However Sky Sports were keen for us to hold an International event instead, because of it being a World Cup year. The nature of Masters events is such that we have to decide early on location, as well teams taking part, to ensure we can contact any potential players in plenty of time. Thus the first Masters event changed from a European Cup event to be held in Nottingham (the closest possible arena to Leicester and most central for other teams) to an International event to be held Belfast. Details were posted on mastersfootball.com the morning we had confirmation and we ensured the PFA were able to pass on any information to any Leicester Masters players at the earliest opportunity. We plan to run the European Masters Cup next year however and although I cannot confirm anything at this stage, it is highly likely Leicester, along with the winner of the 2006 Masters Cup, will be the two domestic clubs taking part, with two foreign clubs to be decided upon. I hope you can pass this information on to any other Leicester Masters fans Paul, who may be thinking otherwise. Many thanks Will Masters Football
