macbeth Posted 3 June 2006 Posted 3 June 2006 AN URGENT APPEAL FOR CASH You may have been aware of an ugly uncivil war in Billanbenland; one of the worst atrocities witnessed for many years. I just want to make an appeal for donations for all the Billanben people made homeless by warmongering warlords hell bent on destruction of the natural habitat of the Billanbens namely their homelands of Gaardenshed. The Billanbens are a peaceful race who live in groups of 2 or....(.well always groups of 2) usually male and little is known about how they procreate as there does not seem to be any females. Their lifestyle centres around doing jolly japes with Littleweed while unsuspecting gardeners have gone in home for a cup of tea and they assumed life would be ever thus until somone pushed the button ( not the sugarbabes one) and much of thir homeland was nuked . Suspected terrorist groups such as SUQ -MADIQ and SHIITE MAPANZA have been quick to distance themselves but more fundamentalists such as MUSTA -FOKS and PEEPOLSEERO have as yet made no disclaimers. I spoke to many of the Billanbens in their temporary makeshift homes and asked them how they were dealing with the crisis and all they could do was shrug and say "flubbalub" a word that to me conveyed everything that was unholy about this war and their resilience to get through it. All we ask is that you send donations to help the Billanbens rebuild their habitat and I will do all I can to help them from my humble mission hut. THANK-YOU please send credit cards ( with pin please) or signed blank cheques , cash in US dollars to; macbeth resident guest ambassador suite paradise bay hotel barbados homeless Billanbens need your support

Rincewind Posted 3 June 2006 Posted 3 June 2006 I know the thread was meant as a bit of fun and I can see the funny side but there are many places in the world where the people live under those exact conditions. Countries whose leaders make war with neighbouring countries and regimes that leave the hard-working people nothing. Whilst we may smile at the post we should also remember how lucky we are living in a free society however much our own government leaders are disliked by individuals. At least we have the power to vote them out. Some are not so lucky.

At least we have the power to vote them out. Some are not so lucky. point taken; but most comedy relies for a certain amount on schadenfreude; whereby others misfortune to greater or lesser effect is used to make us laugh; you only have to think of Dell boy falling through a bar; tom and jerry; or monty python bringing in the spanish inquisition ;basil fawlty using manuels head as a battering ram; none of these things would be funny in real life but comedy transcends this; if you were to consider real life effects of most comedy routines very little would be cause for mirth i cannot think of any comedy that has not got a certain amount of trgedy can you?
macbeth Posted 3 June 2006 Author Posted 3 June 2006 Britain is not a Democracy or else this lot would not still be in power. <_< its precisely because it is a democracy they are in power; as were the tories for 18 years you may not like it but lcfcken has a point its the best there is the alternative however attractive it may appear in the short term soon degenerates into a far more corrupt system than our own utopia is a dream... nothing more
crazy horse Posted 4 June 2006 Posted 4 June 2006 i'm not sending any money they spend it all on pot and weed

In a democracy it is the people who make the decisions. Britain is a constitutional monarchy. A map of the world that does not show Utopia is not worth a second glance.

A map of the world that does not show Utopia is not worth a second glance. if your saying get rid of the monarchy i'm right with you; but democracy while strictly ( theoretically) speaking means government by the people in practice most would describe it as a gov. by the ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES of the people; how could "the people"; ie. 50 million in the UK; vote on every issue that arises most cant be assed to vote once every 4-5 years it would be an admin nightmare not a utopia i admit changes could be made to our electoral system but its still not that bad ;
The People's Hero Posted 4 June 2006 Posted 4 June 2006 Look around you at the people in this country. Would you want many of them to have any real say? Just playing devil's advocate by the way. Don't want to get involved too much in politics on here. For the record, I think Labour have really arsed it up particularly in recent years but neither of the 'real' alternatives seem to be 'real' alternatives at all - they just don't fill me with any optimism. Granted, really B-LIAR and his sleazey associates should be ousted.. but they will be replaced by similar crooked goons. Politicians who get to the top these days just seem to be sleazy ar seholes with more interest in bickering amongst themselves than in trying to make this country a better place to live for the hardworking people who live within it. Having said that, rather a bunch of bent, USAfollowing sycophants run the country than some of the idiots I've heard talking about politics in my local pub. Post over.
macbeth Posted 4 June 2006 Author Posted 4 June 2006 witness poll tax uprising in the 80s as an eg of what people can do if feelings are running high enough some may argue that we get the gov we deserve; if we really want it weve still got plenty of power the trouble is we've grown appathetic post thatcher

Rincewind Posted 4 June 2006 Posted 4 June 2006 That is so true. The pubs are full of would-be soccer managers and PM's Sadly the idea of the common working man running the country has passed it's sell by date. The politicians who run the country juggle our finances but all the bloke down the local can do is jingle his change when it's his round 'I'm skint mate.'

It just irks us all when they don't appreciate they are in good jobs and start taking the piss.
Rincewind Posted 4 June 2006 Posted 4 June 2006 The last Peoples Hero nay the last but one, disappeared during the miners strike. Arthur Scargill tried his best but even he was turned against. How many of the 'average man in the streets' would give up their two cars, semi-detatched, 2.4 kids(Y?) video DVD PC's two holidays per year for the sake of someone who's wages are below the poverty line. and join a General strike? 'I aint paying for dose skroungers let dem git a proppa job, MINES A LAGER JIM'

davieG Posted 4 June 2006 Posted 4 June 2006 Party Politics is the death knell for democracy, it's already killed local government. It should be made illegal to form a political party.
macbeth Posted 4 June 2006 Author Posted 4 June 2006 Party Politics is the death knell for democracy, it's already killed local government. It should be made illegal to form a political party. think i need a bit more detail here ; don't quite see your logic
Guest Posted 5 June 2006 Posted 5 June 2006 I would rather have a constitutional monarchy than an elected president.
davieG Posted 5 June 2006 Posted 5 June 2006 think i need a bit more detail here ; don't quite see your logic Party politics denies the conscience a voice, party manifestos are an excuse to include unpopular/unecessary legislation on the back of popular legislation, with the popular parts often not implemented. Party politics denies your representative to consider the needs of his/her constituents, a prime requirement of our political system because they have to follow the party line. Local government used to be non-party poitical before the 2nd World War (so I'm told). Ok, often very 'conservative' in nature but very much more down to the individual local councillor who now has to follow not only local 'party' requirements but also the national 'party' requirements, again often at the expense of the local need. I could write more but I can't be asked as my interest in politics has gone from high to it's all a waste of time and effort.
