macbeth Posted 5 June 2006 Author Posted 5 June 2006 Party politics denies the conscience a voice, party manifestos are an excuse to include unpopular/unecessary legislation on the back of popular legislation, with the popular parts often not implemented. Party politics denies your representative to consider the needs of his/her constituents, a prime requirement of our political system because they have to follow the party line. Local government used to be non-party poitical before the 2nd World War (so I'm told). Ok, often very 'conservative' in nature but very much more down to the individual local councillor who now has to follow not only local 'party' requirements but also the national 'party' requirements, again often at the expense of the local need. I could write more but I can't be asked as my interest in politics has gone from high to it's all a waste of time and effort. some good points; but party politics are supposed to be a considered and collective representation of the whole of the party on its main aims ; MPs etc still vote how they wish for matters of concience or if the feel stongly enough on any bill put before them nb recent education bill etc

I'm afraid it happens too rarely for me and I've seen far too many of them get a sudden change of conscience in order to climb up what used to be referred to as a greasy pole but these days it's more like a sticky one as they never seem to fall from grace.
