Ultra Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 The article seemed witty and humourous enough, until I read the conclusion... Maybe attending a few games at Sh!te Hart Lane will teach him the error of his ways!
MC Prussian Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 The WC commentaries and blogs on SI.com (Sports Illustrated) were hilarious... For some reason, American sports writers are just hooked on Chelsea's Essien, their young hope for the future, Eddy Adu... In every second sentence I read the same names... the same names... I somehow have the impression, they're not really that well-informed, but rather touch the surface just for the sake of it... The SI WC dreamteam consisted predominantly of Italian and French players... A thing that I feel is a disgrace for all the other talent we've seen this Summer.
MC Prussian Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 Freddy Adu wasn't at the world cup was he? Nope, but they were desperately calling for him... What a life that'd be... The nation's destiny on the shoulders of a 17-year old wunderkind... Poor Americans. It takes more than just one talented player to compete with the world's best. The reason the U.S. were always so high in the FIFA rankings was because they mostly won in their qualifying zone, consisting of... let me see... Bermuda, Antigua, Barbados, Canada (yuck!), Haiti?
Ultra Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 Nope, but they were desperately calling for him... What a life that'd be... The nation's destiny on the shoulders of a 17-year old wunderkind... Quite - you wouldn't find England being as desperate as that...
MC Prussian Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 What are you saying, we are quality! People- and country-wise - No doubt! "Soccer" - Yuck!
Nationwider Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story...=simmons/060719 That's a really good article once you push past the Americanisms.
breadandcheese Posted 22 July 2006 Posted 22 July 2006 Fantastic article. I find it ironic that we are becoming more American in our sport (music at goals, tannoy guys shouting to jeer us up, "Welcome to the jungle" playing at many grounds), yet the commentator is berating his own sports and wishes it was less like that, so that true passion could return. Very funny though.
nhfox Posted 22 July 2006 Posted 22 July 2006 Football is the one sport which is attempting to move away from "Americanism" in the USA. The domestic league in the USA had experimented with rules to Americanize the game: -the clock counted down, not up -the clock stopped on dead ball situations -no injury time; the half was over when the clock showed 0 -no draws, shootouts were used Fortunately, the MLS has made a conscious effort to move away from this. I don't even recall seeing cheerleaders at the New England matches.
Jordan Posted 22 July 2006 Posted 22 July 2006 Bill Simmons can often be very entertaining and he's got a huge cult following here in the States... however, Spurs fit right in among the despicable Boston sports teams he follows.
