Matt Posted 4 August 2006 Posted 4 August 2006 I used to work in a Fish Shop, Although it was boring and I hated I learnt quite a bit and it got me really intrested in fish. Its fine buying the cheap tropical fish and most of them are cheap, its the kit that goes with it that's expensive, i.e. - Tank, Heater, Filters, replacement filters, pureifiers, e.t.c. I do like Tropical Fish though, But where I used to work the whole room was heated instead of each individual tank and it was like a sauna in there, doing a 6 hour day in there wasn't nice, and when it reached mid-afternoon it reacked of BO ...Or it may have just been dirty smelly people who came in Wacky Colours - Guppys, Neons, Barbs, e.t.c There all about £1 if not less if I remember right. Other cool tropical fish - Sharks, Crabs, Frogs, Newts, Paranhas (When fish were dying in tanks, it was always funny watching the Paranhas scrapping over it) I don't have a tropical tank I used to have a Cold-Water tank and I bought some Guppy everyone said the wouldn't last longer than a week/couple of weeks, the lasted for months...Called one of em Steve

Need the pump to create bubbles and stuff because they need oxygen in the water constantly replacing (otherwise it'd be like sticking a person in an airtight room), and you need a filter or else they'll be in their own shit all day. That's my limited knowledge, I've never owned fish. That could be right, I'll be impressed if it is.

Sure you could but tap water means your looking for a coldwater tank, which means you'd be looking at your Goldfish, Shubunkins, Fantails, e.t.c...pretty boring tbh, Coldwater ponds are good because you can get a good selection of big fish, but Coldwater tanks are your stand boring fish really, As I said I had a Coldwater tank and threw a couple of Guppys in and they lasted a fair few months, so prehaps you could get away with that. For a decent started kit (Coldwater) your probably looking at £10 to £20 (Possibly cheaper - depends what you want) but for that price it will be nothing special, for a Tropical Starter kit i'm not sure what price you'd be looking at but i'd imagine it was much more expensive than £10 to £20. P.S - Tap Water for Tropical Fish you'll be looking at saltwater for them, which = More expense. In a coldwater tank you wouldn't need a filter but it just means you'll be cleaning your tank out all the time, As for oxegen in your tank just buy some oxegenating weed its only about 50p and the fish also eat it. If your just getting into fish i'd probably get a cheap coldwater kit, see if you like it then build it up in the future.
