lookwhaticando Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 Frankly, our defence - on the whole - is shite. The national team is much like Leicester - shite at defending set pieces. It proves our undoing far too often, sadly there's no end in sight to that little problem. Still, good debut for the post-Sven era. McClaren off to a good start, and boy did he need it!
SystonFox Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 Eh, come on now, I'm English and biased To be fair they did look dodgy at set-pieces, good job we have Ashley Cole, who is in my mind without doubt the best left back in the world. dont forget to praise everyone else berty - who infact are, the best at everything else in the world. just like carlsberg.
Manwell Pablo Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 Steady now. They looked very dodgy on setpieces in the second half. Greece could easily have got a couple back. But overall, it was an excellent debut for McClaren. Beckham must be wondering whether he'll ever play for England again. He certainly wasn't missed last night! No doubt a improvement. I would have to say though, all four goals were a complete slur on Greek football, absloute Gummy Bear defending. If I remember correctly a slow keep ball game was what we were all backing in Germany! We "needed to slow it down because of the heat" if I remember correctly. This is what Sven did, and of course it was rubbish but there is no way we could of played at that tempo in Germany, in 35 Degree C heat, for more then about 10 minutes. Second half was pretty appualing but I suppouse the subs broke it up a fair bit and the job had already been done. 4-0 Against the European Champions, shouldnt grumble really.
dandannieldanok Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 I wouldn't say last night was a faultless performance but all in all a good night.
shen Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 I wonder if Beckham was watching?? In all honesty i think we passed around more becasue Beckham wasn't in the side, as the majority of the time he would normaly try and play the glorious, long cross field ball. Lampard looked totally different tonight and that was because Hargreaves did all the dirty work enabling Lampard to break forward and do what he does best, also effective due to "Not getting in the way of Gerrard". Gerrard was still class wide right. Rio and Terry - best international centre back pairing in the world. I've been saying this for over a year now... Beckham is average compared to Gerrard on the right. Thank God Maclaren had the balls to drop him.

But don't you think he should be in the squad - could be useful for last ten minutes, has experience for the younger players and surely would be better than say P.Neville
shen Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 But don't you think he should be in the squad - could be useful for last ten minutes, has experience for the younger players and surely would be better than say P.Neville I think someone like SWP or Aaron Lennon would be a lot more useful on the right as a late sub. Obviously he's very good at set pieces and has a good cross, but they're not really missed as Gerrard offers similar quality of long passes and crosses and a whole lot more.
Thracian Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 Gerrard was immense last night. Like a man freed early from a life sentence. And as for Aaron Lennon, what a breath of fresh air. Genuine quality. Twisted his full-back into so many knots it'll need surgeons to put his intestines back in order.
