England Squad for Euro 2008 Qualifiers

Everton striker Andy Johnson has earned a recall to the England squad for next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra and FYR Macedonia.

Three Lions head coach Steve McClaren has named a 24-man squad for the double-header, with England hosting minnows Andorra at Old Trafford on September 2 before facing Macedonia in Skopje on September 6.

Former Birmingham City and Crystal Palace hit-man Johnson has not appeared for England since last summer's tour of America.

The 25-year-old was on standby with Sven Goran Eriksson's World Cup squad, but did not travel to football's showpiece event.

Following an £8.6 million move to The Toffees this summer, Johnson has started the season brightly and has now earned the chance to resurrect his England career next month.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick also returns to the squad after injury, while Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has an opportunity to reach 50 England caps after also being included.

Unsettled Arsenal left back Ashley Cole is also in the 24-man selection, but there is no room again for former England captain David Beckham.

Manchester United's Gary Neville misses out with a calf problem, while Chelsea's Joe Cole and Liverpool's Jamie Carragher are absent through injury.

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney is suspended for both games as a result of his red card against Portugal in the World Cup finals.

"Andy deserves his chance in this squad after starting the season well with his new club," McClaren told the Football Association's official website.

"He's a great lad and a real team player who always gives everything. I've spoken to David Moyes and he's delighted with how well Andy has settled in at Everton.

"I'm also delighted to have Michael Carrick back. Alex Ferguson says he's been training well and should be ready for the two games.

"It's a shame his start at United has been disrupted, but he's a top-quality player and a great passer of the ball."

England squad:

Paul Robinson (Tottenham Hotspur), Chris Kirkland (Liverpool), Ben Foster (Manchester United); Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Ashley Cole (Arsenal), Michael Dawson (Tottenham Hotspur), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), John Terry (Chelsea), Luke Young (Charlton Athletic), Phil Neville (Everton); Owen Hargreaves (Bayern Munich), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Jermaine Jenas (Tottenham Hotspur), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur), Kieran Richardson (Manchester United), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Michael Carrick (Manchester United); Andrew Johnson (Everton), Darren Bent (Charlton Athletic), Peter Crouch (Liverpool), Jermain Defoe (Tottenham Hotspur)

When a player is on loan isn't he deemed to be playing for that club?

Just a minor mistake and me being pedantic but they have Ben Foster(Manchester United)

I think loanees are always listed as being from the team they actually belong to, rather than the team they're currently on loan to.

Phill Neville is who I have the problem with, he's not deserving of a place. Fact.

Nor is Jermaine Judas.. or Jenas... whatever... there's gotta be somebody better to take than these two.

Let's start with Bent + Crouch up front, thanks.

What about Zamora... he's done alright for himself at WestHam, I would say Carlton Cole but he didnt get the chances at Chelsea and with any luck will earn his place in the national squad on the back of his performances at WestHam, both very good players worthy of consideration... Johnson deserves his shot, then again i think it's likley a few players may get their chance.

these players such as Johnson will only get their chances if there are injuries. Rooney will walk back into the side because he is our best player. also Owen, but i am not sure how long he is out for. personally my five strikers would be Rooney, Defoe, Owen, Crouch, Ashton.

Your probably right, though Owen's out for most the season they reckon so it looks like there'll be a slot free to experiment with, I'm not convinced by Johnson... I'd go along with Rooney, Defoe and Crouch, havent seen enougth of Ashton to really be sure of him yet, but Bent's got to be worthy of consideration though his being stuck with Charlton cant help his claim that much... it'll be interesting to see how Rooney fits in with the new squad.

Ashton reminds me of Sheringham, and I do think he'll be a regular fixture within the England setup during McClaren's reign as it's plain to see he has the quality and potential; I just hope he can transfer it from club level to international.

When all fully fit our strikers should be:

Rooney, Owen, Ashton, Crouch

With Defoe, Bent and Walcott as back-ups. Obviously Walcott's time will come though.

I must say our strikers look very very average imo (although I would welcome any of them in a Leicester Shirt) it could be difficult times ahead I have deep reservations that any of them are "World Class"

I think you can say Rooney's "World Class" ditto Owen (when he's fully fit)... Ashton, Defoe, Bent and Walcott are all potential at the international level at the moment, while you cant argue that Crouch has a very solid record of scoring in international games but weather that makes him "world class"? i'm not convinced.

Why isn't Rooney in the squad?

Banned for his grape crushing escapade

Are you a football pundit, every single person on the TV says this
