World Carfree Day — 22 Septembe

September 16, 2005 01:24 AM - Warren McLaren, Sydney

The TV news here the other night, reckoned that consumer spending is likely to dip, due to the high cost of oil and thus fuel for cars. Folk will be buying less, such as clothes and cosmetics, the pundits proffered. No mention was made of people driving less though. So it would seem more than timely that 22 September should be World Carfree Day. For a myriad of reasons this is great promotional event, but what caught our eye was a stat on World Carfree Network's site. They suggest that "A car causes more pollution [in its production] before it's ever driven, than in its entire lifetime of driving." This Saturday, in disgust at such nonsense, an estimated 10,000 cyclists are expected to hit the streets of Berlin. And over in Minsk, Belarus, there's a race to see which is fastest: car, public transport, or bicycle. (And we know who always wins these comps, don't we?). So, don't just sit there, pedal, walk, skate, run, blade, train, tram, paddle over to the international events site and see what's going down in your neighbourhood. 1,544 cities in 40 countries, so we're told. ::World Carfree Day

Wow!

We should launch a rival to Sky.

I just thought of that.

Yeah I could say the same, also how (turning it into a political debate) does his Tonyness expect me to travel into work, dropping off my son and my wife 13 miles apart and in a variety of directions, via pubic hair transport?

Yeah. Also we're lazy and spend a lot of money and a lot of tax running our cars and we're going to damn well use them.

frankly you aint gonna change a nation that spends more money per head than most other countries in the world on cars into treehuggers overnight....or AT ALL in fact.

Yea! Everyone knows oil is bad for the environment and it's just sitting in the ground at the moment, being bad for it. So it's far better to get lots of cars to use it up so that the oil will go and there will be no bad oil in the ground.

Not nor nothing.

Car drivers rock :punk:

Well I walked to work today, but that was more due to the fact that we're having drinkies after work & I didn't even know it was carfree day.

Okay everyone, lets stop using our cars & see how long it takes for the country to grind to halt due to billions in lost revenue from car tax, IPT, fuel tax etc. Bl00dy hypocrites

I have used public transport to get to and from work. Whilst there are a number of benefits (mostly lack of road rage), the downside is not getting home this side of 6 o' clock

...and you also get to contract any of 100 potentially transmissible diseases being carried by your public transport chums.
