I've just moved into a new house and have a BT line but unsure of what broadband provider to go with. Is Virgin any good??

Go Telewest young man!

I've just signed up with Virgin after several years of cabled bliss with NTL. They (Virgin) don't tie you in for ever (30 days notice) so you can give them a whirl to see how good they are. They do charge about £45 to leave, but I reckon you could leave free of charge if the service is crap and you complain enough.

I'm getting download speeds of between 1.4mb-1.8mb (our exchange will handle upto 3mb) which is fine for our needs. Things seem to slow down around teatime though. I think our exchange could be a bit shitty.

Overall - I'm fairly impressed with Virgin - it was easy to set up and you get a free adsl modem (although I just use a modem/router of my own). I'm just biding my time before Sky role out their free-of-charge Base broadband package in our area, and then I may switch again.

I've heard Pipex are also very good, but are slightly more expensive than average.

Aye, if you've got cable, sack off the phone line and get your internet sent through the digital hosepipe. I've just moved to a 99.99% cabled area, apart from one side of one street - ours.

I miss NTL.

I thought Virgin was NTL

Or was that only the mobile operations? That'll need some checking. :P

Virgin only provide a dial-up and adsl services here. NTL/Telewest do cable. They might be part of the same group but it's different services.

Fair enough.

Saves me a few minutes researching. :P

Just got Sky Broadband, and it's pretty good. It's free to Sky subscribers, or £5 for 8Meg and £10 for 16Meg!!

I've just had this offer from the Hoff

email_upto_8mb.gif Hi there,

You may be wondering why I, The Hoff, am writing you an email.

Well, you're a sports fan right? I myself am very good and very talented at sport. For example, it is a little known fact that I hold the title for the World's Best Slow Motion Running In A Pair Of Tight Shorts.

You try it, it ain't easy.

But if you like your sport, you're gonna really like this deal from Pipex. You get up to 8Mb broadband from just £6.50 a month. Plus you get free unlimited calls, all day every day, a free modem and connection worth £85 and free anti-virus and firewall. And no Kitt, there aren't any hidden charges and you get connected straight away. Nice!

So, if you'd like to hear more about Pipex's fantastic deals, just click here. Be prepared though, they're nearly as sexy as me!
