The People's Hero Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 I've just decided I'm going to do this. What I need a bit of help with is where to buy the Motherboard and CPU from, which are compatible/incompatible and which are the best to buy. Thanks.

Shum Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 Try Ebuyer Think they got a website Eclipse Computers are pretty good mate.
The People's Hero Posted 6 December 2006 Author Posted 6 December 2006 Any tips on a good motherboard chaps? ps thanks for the tips on who to buy from.
Trumpet Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 All the above are good, but the best for building your own PC would be www.overclockers.co.uk
Daggers Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 Don't use cheese and crackers, I tried it once but as hunger took hold I ended up with no computer...just wires and crumbs.
Trumpet Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 As for motherboards, i'd say this... http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct....rodid=MB-141-AS It really depends on your budget though. If you want, tell me what kind of money you'll be working with and i could give a good idea of components to buy. edit - if its only the motherboard CPU your after then try and make it a core 2 duo CPU. My suggestion: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct....rodid=CP-128-IN http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct....rodid=MB-141-AS Compatible. The CPU (if i remember correctly) is described as being 66% faster than a 3ghz Pentium4) Also, with that motherboard you are ready for all the new hardware thats coming out prior to Windows vista early next year. Just be sure, then, to get a decent PSU 350W+, 1-2gig of ram and a decentish PCI-E graphics card (anything around £100 will be fine),then youll be ready for vista.
The People's Hero Posted 6 December 2006 Author Posted 6 December 2006 I'm going for 2 gb of ram. I'm pretty much fine with most of the stuff, it's the motherboard/processor thing I need help on. Thanks for the suggestions though mate. One other question, I've just tried to stick some more RAM in my current system. I have a spare slot for extra RAM. Anyway, this extra 'stick' is exactly the same capacity/speed/format as the other two. A series of 'chunks' of 32mb to make 512mb per slot. So I have 1gb RAM at present, I was going up to 1.5gb RAM. Anyway, it just hung my system and it wouldn't start up. What did I do wrong? Never come across this before...
billabob Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 steal two or three, take them apart and re build a mega computer!
JoeyB Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 just give up and go buy a new pc you probably just knocked one of the power cables out there socket
JadeFalcon Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 just a note .... buy a grounding strap before you do anything with the pc/inside a pc TPH ... take your old ram out and test the new ram in the same slot ... also make sure the ram is in the correct slots as dependant on the motherboard certain ram needs to go in certain slots i.e RDRAM needs pairs + continuity ram (CRIMM) in the empty slots ... if its DDR you may need ram in certain slots .. also make sure your motherboard can handle the 1.5gb of ram ... if not you may need a bios update on it to take effect of the extra ram
The People's Hero Posted 6 December 2006 Author Posted 6 December 2006 just give up and go buy a new pc you probably just knocked one of the power cables out there socket You misunderstand, I removed the rogue RAM (I like that - rogue RAM) and it then booted perfectly.

Hmmmm.. Thanks mate, think I'll give up on it. I was just trying to prolong the life of his mb/cpu for a bit!
JadeFalcon Posted 6 December 2006 Posted 6 December 2006 yeah tph the bogus ram ... try it on its own in the working rams slot without the known working ram in the machine... that way u will easy find out wether the ddr stick is at fault or wether its down to something else like bios limitation
