Filbert_Ross Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 To be fair, not all that many tourists would know where it was if it was named after either of the three cities. Nottingham is perhaps most famous on the continent, but it's not closest to Nottingham so it's sorta fuzzy. so why would they fly to East midlands if they wasnt planning on going somewhere near?? its easier to pin point where your gonna land if there is a city in the airport title and not just East midland airport.

In which case it would've made more sense to name it Derby Airport, as Derby is the nearest of the three cities. However, if there's a security alert or incident at the airport (as there was during the summer), the bill goes to the council tax payers of.....Leicester. The current deal is probably the best one we're likely to get.
Filbert_Ross Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 i couldnt care less which city its named after, if its in derbyshire call it derbyshire airport or whatever
lookwhaticando Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 It's in Leicestershire, It's closest to Derby city. Where Nottingham figures I don't know.

lookwhaticando Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 I still think it should be Castle Donnington Airport. Perhaps I'm biased, though.

davieG Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 Am I missing something here, If i was flying in from somewhere and it said EMA, I'd look at a map to see where it was, after all Gatwick and Standstead are hardly London are they? Isn't there an airport up Noth (Sheffield) no called the Robin Hood Airport? And Prestwick is claasified as a Glasgow airport. Liverpool Airport is now the John Lennon airport, not a lot of good if you don't know who the Beatles are, and will people know that in 20 years Like wise Belfast Airport is now the George Best Airport again if you're not a football supoporter totally meaningless. Would people abroad know where Bournemouth, Cardiff, Coventry, Exeter, Leeds Bradford, Luton, Teeside are to name but a few? Call it Castle Donnington Airport - that's what it was originally called, that's where it is, people will get used to it if they stop changing it's bloody name every few years. Failing that I'd settle for the davieG airport, well people on here will know where it is

To be honest I'd think that was in Glenfield... PS - I want to fly to the Jari Rantanen International Aerodrome.
The People's Hero Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 This thread has descended in to farce.

cisono Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 YES! The movement gains momentum! :) ;) :D Doubt it will work, somehow...
Guest Posted 10 December 2006 Posted 10 December 2006 People abroad may know of Nottingham, but they couldn't tell you where it is. We met some Americans who thought Kevin Costner had made the place up! And seeing as in the film, Robin Hood was in Dover at lunchtime, and had managed to ride to Nottingham in time for tea, that's not really going to help matters.
