Louise Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 ********** East Midlands Airport is now going to be renamed as 'East Midlands Airport - Nottingham, Leicester Derby', three years after it changed from being just EMA. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/6220118.stm Thoughts?

It just makes everyone look stupid?
lildave3 Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Why can't they just call it East Midlands Airport, lot easier.
Katy Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Ridiculous! Why does Nottingham have to come first. It's more local to Leicestershire and Derbyshire than it is Notts
Lemon Harpic Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Why can't they just call it East Midlands Airport, lot easier. I have a funny feeling that, fifty squillion quid worth of name changes down the line, they probably will just settle for EMA.
The People's Hero Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Ridiculous! Why does Nottingham have to come first. It's more local to Leicestershire and Derbyshire than it is Notts One of them has to come first! Strikes me they can't win. Having said that, there was never anything wrong with EMA.
Thracian Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 How do the morons behind this get their jobs? East Midlands Airport is fine. Always was.
Dr The Singh Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Think of all the money it's gonna cost to rebrand the bloody thing, it's a joke!!!
Louise Posted 8 December 2006 Author Posted 8 December 2006 I have a funny feeling that, fifty squillion quid worth of name changes down the line, they probably will just settle for EMA. I agree. Everyone I know has always called it EMA anyway, I suspect that in a year or so they'll drop the three Cities from the end all together and it'll just be EMA. The whole thing has been ridiculous anyway, remember when they were first talking about renaming it and they had votes on Central News, East Midlands Today, set up a website etc and CN made a big deal of the vote etc. People voted for it to stay as EMA, and CN held a huge ceremony over it any everything, then less than a month later they changed it to NEMA anyway.
Katy Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 One of them has to come first! Strikes me they can't win. Having said that, there was never anything wrong with EMA. One of them doesn't have to come first. East Midlands Airport has nothing to do with Nottingham, some jumped up pratt thought that Nottingham was better known (which of course it isn't) and shoved that in front of it. You are right though, there was nothing wrong at all with East Midlands Airport. Some people just love to waste money.
Guest Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 I did laugh at the leader of Nottingham City Council, who is apparently outraged. "They never consulted us", he blubbed. That's funny; I don't think Leicester or Derby's council's were consulted the first time. Yah boo sucks. Up yours, Tree Hugger.

lookwhaticando Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 What a ridiculous move. It shouldn't have been changed to begin with. Nottingham EMA indeed. <_< Instead of reverting back to EMA, they've added two more city names to the title - just to confuse things. They've taken the European Union route to change - they opted for fudge. As for the Notts bloke, what a plank that guy is. Unjustly awarded the city to begin with, he's now upset that his city has lost prestige it was never due. Plank. Merry Christmas, idiot.
lookwhaticando Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Now that I think about it, since I was born just over the hill from the airport, I think it should be called Castle Donnington Airport.
cisono Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Having said that, there was never anything wrong with EMA. I like EMA
Simon Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 I'm just glad its no longer called Nottingham East Midlands airport- now they can finally get rid of those bloody advertisement boards with 'Nottingham' plastered all over them...
lookwhaticando Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 I'm just glad its no longer called Nottingham East Midlands airport- now they can finally get rid of those bloody advertisement boards with 'Nottingham' plastered all over them... Yeah, but now the signs might have Nottingham AND Derby on them, if they plan on using the "full" name on the adverts.
Lemon Harpic Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 My Masterplan: 1) Set up Lemon Harpic Marketing Inc. 2) Recommend change of name to Eastwood Anstey Stapleford Thringstone Matlock Ilkeston Derby Leicester Ashbourne Nottingham Desford Shepshed Airport. 3) As this is a bit of a mouthful, they should use the acronym. 4) Charge £2,000,000 fee.
cisono Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 Yeah, but now the signs might have Nottingham AND Derby on them, if they plan on using the "full" name on the adverts. That wouldn't be much of an improvement
Collymore Posted 8 December 2006 Posted 8 December 2006 That wouldn't be much of an improvement Brian Deane's heliport?
Filbert_Ross Posted 9 December 2006 Posted 9 December 2006 i think it shouldnt just be called EMA, if I was travelling to say Germany I would prefere to know which city its closet too, and not just EMA. looking at it from a tourists point of view.

To be fair, not all that many tourists would know where it was if it was named after either of the three cities. Nottingham is perhaps most famous on the continent, but it's not closest to Nottingham so it's sorta fuzzy.

I am afraid I have to confirm that most people from the continent have no idea where Leicester is (or how to say its name if they see it written down ). Unless they are into rugby perhaps...

Too right. Our club should never have put them up in the first place.
