City Fan Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 Sir Les has gone to READING!!!! I can't help thinking we could have had the funds to sign him until the end of the season!
Mark Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 Maybe we could have, it's a good reason Levein saw sense and didn't persue an interest then.
Hullfox Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 Sir Les has gone to READING!!!!I can't help thinking we could have had the funds to sign him until the end of the season! 52451 True, he was great for us but we have to look forward. MDV and Connolly are the immediate future, they need their chance.
City Fan Posted 6 January 2005 Author Posted 6 January 2005 He would have been an awesome short term signing. He did brilliantly last season in the Premiership and would set the Championship on fire this season. Connolly and Scowcroft are hardly banging the goals in are they?

He was the only one that worked, but you're taking it too far wanting him back, where is our future with a 39? year old up front and a 38 year old in defence.
Durnerz Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 With Reading being closer to home for him than Bolton I think thats why he's moved there.

Does he light your fire?
City Fan Posted 6 January 2005 Author Posted 6 January 2005 No, because Gemmill is dreadful! Sir Les would put some spark back into our side and would push us up into playoff contention.....
davieG Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 It would have been a good if he'd have stayed, less changes but he didn't. So let's stop looking backwards to old players, old managers and lets not have anymore wouldn't it be nice etc and look foward to a younger more agile, bursting with energy team hopefully with a bit of skill and football brain thrown in as well.
Mark Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 No, because Gemmill is dreadful! Sir Les would put some spark back into our side and would push us up into playoff contention..... 52467 Last season we had Muzzy to create chances, so your just clutching at straws if you think the same would happen this season. He may score goals at Reading because they know how to pass and play the ball, he may not. But it doesn't mean he would do the same as he did here last season. Levein has already said the squad age needs lowering, it seems this news doesn't mix with you too well, you want it increased!
Solihullfox Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 Would hazard a guess that the reasons for Sir Les going to Reading are really two fold. First of all the ground is much closer to home than Bolton or Leicester, had we have been interested, but more likely the real reason is the pay packet likely to be being waved in his mush by Mr. Madjeski, a man of much wonga of course.
Hullfox Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 Connolly and Scowcroft are hardly banging the goals in are they? 52456 With a proper striker alongside him the time has come for Connolly to produce but as Petrescu says, it's time to forget about 39 year olds. I can't see how you think we really need to go up this season. We need a major improvement, verging on a miracle to get in a promotion spot. We would struggle like hell too in the top flight.
Who ate all the pies? Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 We'd be relegated in the top flight! We've got to work hard not to be struggling in this season. Ferdinand was a good player for us and one of Micky's best signings, but it's time to let it go now and see what the new management team can do for us with their new signings!
Scow Posted 6 January 2005 Posted 6 January 2005 We don't need to get promoted this season - We have another season of parachute payments. It's vital we get the foundations right, and then hopefully challenge for promotion with a more settled, younger squad.
Jonesy_rules Posted 7 January 2005 Posted 7 January 2005 So Les has gone to reading, think he may be able to help them on their push to the premiership! Not good for other teams in the devision! anyone know why he's turned Southampton down?

Anish Posted 7 January 2005 Posted 7 January 2005 So Les has gone to reading, think he may be able to help them on their push to the premiership! Not good for other teams in the devision! anyone know why he's turned Southampton down? 52620 Because Soton could go down - and Les probably didn't want 3 relegations in the last 3 years of his career! Being relegated 3 years in a row with West Ham, Leicester and Soton would be an injustice to one of the finest strikers of his football generation.
Samu Posted 8 January 2005 Posted 8 January 2005 There's no doubt that Les has had a wonderful career and to help Reading to promotion would seem much more appealing than a hard fought relegation fight with either Bolton or Southampton. No offence to Bolton but when he joined them in the summer I very much doubt he would have forseen them challenging for Europe. Instead Bolton will probably finish mid table and this would have hardly been a fitting end. It's a shame he didn't stay on for us because he could have helped us push for promotion and to finish on a high note would have been done him justice. I wish him all the best at Reading though.
