Old bank statements

Can anyone think of any reason to keep bank statements older than 5 years?

I mean, it is not a legal or anything like that, is it ...

Frankly, I'd rather store other stuff (like love letters etc... not that I have that many of those :P )

You must have either very little but capable jars or a very large house... :dunno:

18 months is enough for most purposes (ie, the unlikely event of you needing to prove your income for one reason or another). I usually keep a complete tax year's worth: 6-April to 5-April.

If you're self employed or a higher rate tax payer, I'd recommend you keep them for longer.

However, if you need replacements from your bank and quote the Data Protection Act to them (again and again), I think they can only charge you a small amount for each request, no matter how many you need.

If you have obsessive compulsive disorder, I suggest you refer the question to your psychiatrist. :P

Depending on the bank, you may only be able to access the last 6 months (not enough for me to complete my tax return). Also, I do run a small business so because of that reason I may need to keep records for something like 3 or 5 years ...

I could never let go of mine.

They're like children to me.

Yup. If you're self-employed, it's five years from the latest filing date for SA Returns. (31 January 2002)

There's nothing wrong with children.. Although I couldn't eat a whole one.
