cisono Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Can anyone think of any reason to keep bank statements older than 5 years? I mean, it is not a legal or anything like that, is it ... Frankly, I'd rather store other stuff (like love letters etc... not that I have that many of those )
Milky Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 My Dad just bought a shredder, and he tells me to shred away, so go for it!

cisono Posted 8 January 2007 Author Posted 8 January 2007 I keep mine for posterity. I keep everything. In little jars. You must have either very little but capable jars or a very large house...

Nationwider Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 Can anyone think of any reason to keep bank statements older than 5 years? I mean, it is not a legal or anything like that, is it ... Frankly, I'd rather store other stuff (like love letters etc... not that I have that many of those ) 18 months is enough for most purposes (ie, the unlikely event of you needing to prove your income for one reason or another). I usually keep a complete tax year's worth: 6-April to 5-April. If you're self employed or a higher rate tax payer, I'd recommend you keep them for longer. However, if you need replacements from your bank and quote the Data Protection Act to them (again and again), I think they can only charge you a small amount for each request, no matter how many you need. If you have obsessive compulsive disorder, I suggest you refer the question to your psychiatrist.
Scarby Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 you still need a hard copy surely thats only if you run a business!
stez Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 surely thats only if you run a business! nah, it alway helps especially when you wanna claim monies back from unfair back charges.

Depending on the bank, you may only be able to access the last 6 months (not enough for me to complete my tax return). Also, I do run a small business so because of that reason I may need to keep records for something like 3 or 5 years ...
Guest Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 I could never let go of mine. They're like children to me.

If you're self-employed, it's five years from the latest filing date for SA Returns. (31 January 2002)
Guest Posted 8 January 2007 Posted 8 January 2007 i know how you feel towards children though There's nothing wrong with children.. Although I couldn't eat a whole one.
