It is about knocking down Thomas Cook's Temperance Hotel, in Granby Street.

Surely they could find other buildings to knock down first?!?!?!

HISTORIC BUILDING IS SET TO BE BULLDOZED

BY JENNY HARDCASTLE

CHIEF POLITICAL REPORTER

10:30 - 17 May 2007

Controversial plans to demolish a historic building and put up a £30 million complex of shops, bars and offices have been given the go-ahead.

Protesters are furious at the decision to allow developers to knock down Thomas Cook's Temperance Hotel, in Granby Street, Leicester.

Cathco Property Group has been given permission by council officers to demolish the building and put up a seven-storey development.

Rowan Roenisch, of the Leicester group of the Victorian Society, campaigned against the plans.

She said: "We're shocked and upset. This is an important fragment of Leicester's history.

"It was built in 1853 and it was where Thomas Cook lived and where his wife ran a hotel. He was the pioneer of the international tourist industry.

"This is so important for Leicester - we are supposed to be promoting tourism here. We were just asking for them to keep the facade of the building.

"Granby Street was declared a conservation area just a year ago - to put this monster in there is just mad."

Stuart Bailey, chairman of Leicester Civic Society, said the decision was "utterly deplorable".

He said: "With a little imagination from the developers and a little persuasion from planners, we could have had the new office complex and preserved the hotel. What has been approved is the worst of both worlds. It is neither conservation nor regeneration."

However, the seven-storey building could play a part in Leicester Regeneration Company's plans for a new business quarter in the city, near the station. The aim is to create enough office space in the new quarter to accommodate some 4,000 jobs.

Architects went back to the drawing board after the city council said the plan did not fit in with the Granby Street conservation area.

Changes to the outside of the proposed building were drawn up to try to win approval for the scheme. Dover Street will be widened as part of the plans, and there will be parking spaces for 62 cars.

The council officers' report says: "In the view of the city council, the proposal complies with the relevant criteria in the City of Leicester Local Plan, and there are no material considerations which outweigh these policies."

They have included a condition that the developer should provide a "commemoration" of the site's association with Thomas Cook.

A spokesman for architects Marchini Curran said the developer did not want to comment on the plans.

A city council spokesman said: "The planning decision was made under the council's scheme of delegation.

"There was no reason to take it to development control committee, because we received only four objections to the plans, and it was not called in by any councillors."

There are some beautiful building on Granby St and High Street in particular. The next time you have a minute, look up at the detail on the top of many of them.

The problem with them is that they are next to poor buildings. If they were all good I could understand the concern. As they are not.....knock them down and build Kebab Houses.

I'm afraid LCC has been behaving like some cheap tart from the early sixties they'll drop anything for a few quid. What it means is they'll get a bigger council tax income from the new building.

But the City Centre is an absolute dump anyway and I rarely visit it unless I'm forced to. In fact if it wasn't for my unexplainable pull towards LCFC I'd have cleared off years ago.

semper eadem - always the same... :(

just one of many many buildings - it wouldn't happen anywhere else...

and, christ, its not like there aren't any empty offices/shops elsewhere, just another white elephant, to be sure.
