Penance paid, Kisnorbo earns a place

WHEN Leicester City defender Patrick Kisnorbo is named on the Socceroos' 23-man Asian Cup squad today, he will have completed a return from the international wilderness that many thought might never happen.

Three years ago, he made his international debut, but it has taken him since then to be considered for a place alongside Lucas Neill at the heart of Australia's defence.

In 2004, the former South Melbourne defender became a key part of then coach Frank Farina's plans for the 2004 Olyroo squad but fell out of favour when he skipped a training camp to return to his then Scottish club, Hearts, for treatment to an injury and to prepare for the league season.

He then was dropped from the Olyroos and ignored by Farina and his successor, Guus Hiddink.

He was left out of the World Cup squad, but kept his mouth shut and reasoned that he still had some way to go to get back into the national coaching staff's good books.

A reprieve came when coach Graham Arnold embarked on a rebuilding program.

Kisnorbo got his chance against Ghana in November in London and since has played against Denmark, China and Uruguay.

He looks to have edged past Nuremberg's Michael Beauchamp and Polish-based Michael Thwaite to snare the vacant centre-half spot.

"He has taken his chance," Arnold said. "This is an area where we have had retirements and there is a change of the guard. Paddy has been very solid. He is getting more used to the demands of international soccer, he is learning tactically how to cope. There are things he needs to improve, but he is learning …"

Kisnorbo is fast, athletic and better than most of the other Socceroo defenders in the air. He is suited to being used as a defensively oriented marker alongside Neill.

"I am just trying hard to get 90 minutes and do my best for the team every time I am chosen," Kisnorbo said recently.

"I think I get better every game I play for the national team. I have started four out of four now, which is just fantastic. The more I start, the better for myself and my prospects."

He deserves his place in the squad. I think personally, he had a good season, certainly standing out from everyone else.

Kisnorbo deserves to be in the Aussi squad, unlike Harry Kewell who gets injured every time he runs more than 10 yards

If we have this much trouble with Macauly, Neilson and Ian Hume, it's bloody good we don't have Fabio Quagliarella, Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker, Marcin Baszczynski or Øyvind Leonhardsen on our books! ^_^

haha, Oh dear, the teams so bad we don't even know their names, going back to the matter in hand, of course kisnorbo deserves a place in the squad, Australia have an awful defense and he is much better than most from there !!

They have Lucas Neill and Craig Moore, both capable defenders.

Kisnorbo definitely deserves to be in the squad.
