Sly Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 dig it up, keep what you like, improve the soil (dig in peat or whatever) put back what you like/is still alive....... Thank you. I think my main problem is due to the land around me mainly being clay based.
stez Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Very nice work my friend tell me a bit about aerating the lawn......s it worth it???? And as Sly says...ANY OTHER worth while tips PLEASE! aerating a lawn which is used a lot is essential, but all you need is a garden fork, a spring tine rake, a yard brush, some sand and a bag of grass seed. about october time rake the lawn to remove the thatch (moss and dead grass) fork the whole area (or the compacted/bare patches if you can't be bothered with the whole lot) spead the sand over the holes, brush it in lob some seed over and retire to a seat.

stez Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 Thank you. I think my main problem is due to the land around me mainly being clay based. then peat or even loads of washed sand is what you need, clay can be a nightmare, i refused to take a job, that was on clay, once.......
Sly Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 then peat or even loads of washed sand is what you need, clay can be a nightmare, i refused to take a job, that was on clay, once....... Its been a nightmare. if your lawn is that bad then more often than not you're best off starting afresh, around october time or next march/april

Sly Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 if your lawn is that bad then more often than not you're best off starting afresh, around october time or next march/april I was actually toying with the idea of giving up and going designer with woodchip and palm plants instead.
stez Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 My lawn's like a marsh in winter and concrete in summer, anything I can do? aerating is the key, also try top dressing (ie chucking around) with a sand and peat mix
stez Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 I was actually toying with the idea of giving up and going designer with woodchip and palm plants instead. well, there'll come a time when lawns aren't feasible because of more summers like last year. all i'll say about woodchip is it looks grim when it's been bleached by the sun
Sly Posted 8 June 2007 Posted 8 June 2007 well, there'll come a time when lawns aren't feasible because of more summers like last year. all i'll say about woodchip is it looks grim when it's been bleached by the sun I'm going to have a go with the sand and see how I get on. If that fails then maybe I'll just restart.
