Sports Scientist

Just reading the Sporting Blue...

Not sure if it's been discussed elsewhere, but I haven't come across it yet. Allen appointed Doyle as our Sports Scientist.

Few quotes from The Blue...

Damien is a sports scientist with more letters after his name than an alphabet
He has been with me since I started at Barnet, working for nothing
I have never been one to crack the whip and those (fitness) programmes will be left upto the players and are optional.

The club now certainly has a much different set up to when we were mainly controlled by Kelly and Stowell.

Anybody else know what bringing in a sports scientist will add to us?

Sports science is a discipline that studies the application of scientific principles and techniques with the aim of improving sporting performance. Human movement is a related scientific discipline that studies human movement in all contexts including that of sport.

The study of sports science traditionally incorporates areas of physiology, psychology, motor control and biomechanics but also includes other topics such as nutrition and diet, sports technology, anthropometry and performance analysis.

Sports scientists and performance consultants are growing in demand and employment numbers, with the ever-increasing focus within the sporting world on achieving the best results possible. Several sport performance consultants of note include Dr. Filippo Ongaro (Italy), Dr. Jacques Dallaire (USA/Canada), Dr Arthur Stewart (United Kingdom) and Ric Charlesworth (New Zealand).

Higher-education degrees in sports science or human movement are also becoming increasingly popular with many universities now offering both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the discipline. Opportunities for graduates in these fields include employment as a physical education teacher, dietician or nutritionist, performance analyst, sports coach, sports therapist, fitness centre manager, sports administrator or retail manager of a sports store. Graduates may also be well positioned to undertake further training to become a physiotherapist.

What worries me is that Allen had these people at Barnet etc. whereas we didn't, and quite possibly due to lackof funds.

Though Allen did say he was working for free when he was at Barnet...

It still highlights what a disgrace the setup was last season in comparison, although I cannot be arsed to provide any validity to suggest it makes any difference. I recall Kelly going on about a 'sport scientific' pre-season last year, and obviously the rest is history!!

It was on the OS, with the announcement for Allen's staff last week.

The entire subject of coaching and fitness staff wasn't discussed at any great length, though, so it was easily missed. ;)

Feel free to close/merge if you want. :dunno:

It really does show how things have altered at the club though with the appointment of the new staff.

It wasn't exactly a disgrace it was the inevitable result of our administration, remember we were still a club with zero credit ratings, we couldn't borrow 5p to buy a lollipop.

MMs buyout means that the club no longer has to pay up front for everything.

Well it was, we were practically run by Kelly and Stowell, then Miller came in late on.

Damian Doyle...You know, that sounds like a hell of a good name to me! Probably connected with the Boston Doyles. Old money, blue chip stock. You know, I think it's all starting to come back to me now!!!

Isn't it like a dodgy, fake physio, I don't think it's money well spent to get him in !!

I don't think he'd appreciate being called dodgy and fake.

Sports scientists cover a wide range of topics - as varied as psychology and nutrition. Some of them carry expertise in areas such as performance analysis - one particular aspect favoured by Newcastle's Sam Allardyce. It takes a fair bit of education to become a proper sports scientist.

Very different role to a physio.

And on the topic of "money well spent" I disagree completely.

Martin Allen has always worked with this system - he's had a sports scientist in his previous jobs... if that's the system he uses and prefers, then I think the money spent on getting in this sports scientist is money well spent. You don't bring in a manager you like, then tell him to change the way he works to save some money. When Levein joined us, we did away with the Director of Football position because Levein didn't like working with such a position (and wasn't used to it) - we changed the system to suit his managerial style.

The bar has been raised as far as physios are concerned.

From now I on expect two girls in minuscule shorts to run on and give the players bottles of beer.

Very good points.

It just wouldn't make any sense to not allow him the the people he wants in, if he's worked with them from day one aswell. If he has been working for nothing aswell I'm sure it's nice for Allen to offer him a bit of money as pay back for the support he's given him.
