IDEA OR IKEA Posted 11 June 2007 Author Posted 11 June 2007 No, but I do know the way to San Jose. No good need to get to Saint-Tropez, sorry!

IDEA OR IKEA Posted 11 June 2007 Author Posted 11 June 2007 Car or plane? Or are you going to say something flashy and showy-offy like yacht? Car preferably, plane will probabilly be too expensive, does anyone know if Lyon is on the way or Nantes?

davieG Posted 11 June 2007 Posted 11 June 2007 Car preferably, plane will probabilly be too expensive, does anyone know if Lyon is on the way or Nantes? Both of them would take you off course a bit. your best to go straight down the middle. You can get cheap flights to Nice which isn't that far away.
AoWW Posted 11 June 2007 Posted 11 June 2007 Car preferably, plane will probabilly be too expensive, does anyone know if Lyon is on the way or Nantes? Have done the journey to the South of France by car a couple of times... be warned, it's knackering stuff - takes approx 12 hours. I assume you're starting from Calais? If so, a couple of different route options: 1) Calais - skirt Paris - Auxerre - Lyon - Valence - skirt Marseille - St Tropez (personally I'm not a big fan of this route as I always seem to hit nightmarish traffic round Paris. However, theoretically, it is the quickest) Route via Paris area 2) Calais - Reims - Troyes - Dijon - Lyon... cont. as above. (Prefer this route... is more scenic IMO!) However, a bit less straightforward. Scenic route via Troyes Links are to the route planners I'd use for each journey. Whichever route you choose, yes you will go more or less via Lyon. Nantes is nowhere near! Don't forget you'll need money for toll roads in France too.

lildave3 Posted 11 June 2007 Posted 11 June 2007 Everytime we go we go through Lyon. I know that much.
Smudge Posted 11 June 2007 Posted 11 June 2007 Haven't done the journey since the 80's but we would go Calais, Paris, Lyon, Avignon then East all by autoroutes. We would vary the return journey by heading East into Italy then North through St Gothards Pass into Switzerland then Germany. Cross the Rhine into Strazbourg then back to Calais. We would stay along the coast at Cavalaire sur Mer, Less crowded than St Tropez, cheaper and definitely more family oriented. St Tropez is close by for restaurants and bars. Be warned the dockside cafes are tres cher.

AoWW Posted 12 June 2007 Posted 12 June 2007 Was thinking of going onto MAdrid afterwards, is that an easy journey? Erm, well it's technically possible... but you'll need a lot of time. Again, it's easily a good 12 hour drive from St Tropez to Madrid (via Barcelona)... you're making it a pretty big circular route!!! If a full-scale raod trip is what you're planning though, then it's do-able.
dandannieldanok Posted 12 June 2007 Posted 12 June 2007 Calais - Reims A26 Reims - Troyes A4 Troyes - Dijon A5 Dijon - Beaune A31 Beaune - Lyon A6 Lyon - Aix-en-Provence A7 Aix-en-Provence - St. Tropez A8 (+ a few minor roads) Lots of tolls in this route but it is quick and direct, lots of traffic around Lyon but I bet you have more problems on the M25. PS: You can get a list of directions off Eurocamp which is very useful.
