The 22-year-old has arrived at Sunderland in a £3.5million deal and becomes Roy Keane's first signing of the summer. The versatile performer agreed terms and passed a medical at The Stadium of Light on Monday. Halford has decided to link up with Keane's ambitious side after failing to establish himself at Reading. The former Colchester star made just three appearances for Reading after arriving at the club during the January transfer window. Keane is a big fan of Halford and he is expected to be the first of several new faces on Wearside this summer.

You cant play the kind of football they play in the Premiership anymore. He got found out a number of times in this league, but got lucky with several last minute winners and a scabby win in the play-off final.

Handsome wages as a player over a long period of time, a fair amount of it surely invested wisely. Besides, Sunderland isn't really owned by him... I doubt he has a very large stake in the business at all. He merely fronted the consortium to buy the club. Much like Gary Lineker was the face of the City takeover all those years ago, but he wasn't putting in anywhere near as much cash as was needed to take control of the club. Front a consortium and get others to stump up the cash. In fact, looking at the number of shares held by eight of the consortium members (9998 shares total) - Quinn himself owns one of the smallest stakes - with just 1000 shares (the second smallest holding). The bid placed valued the club at about 10m quid... so the value of Quinn's shares are in the region of 1m quid. That's assuming the full 10m was paid for the club. As I said... he's merely a bit part player, really. He's chairman, despite owning one of the smallest stakes in the business... he's just the public face of the consortium, because chances are you've never heard of any of the others.
