Simi Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Looks like Torres is likely to arrive at Anfield in the near future, for around 27 million. Atletico Madrid striker Torres is likely to be the first at a club record £27million, as the two clubs are understood to have held extensive talks regarding a transfer for the Spanish international. But now Man City are looking to hijack the bid. Now they have money they think they can lure Torres away from Liverpool Reports in Spain suggest that Manchester City have lodged a bid for Fernando Torres but the Spanish international is still set for a move to Liverpool. It is believed that three clubs, Liverpool, Internazionale and Man City have met the demands of Atletico for their prized striker. However, Torres is set on a move to Anfield as talks continue between the two clubs - with a deal likely to be finalised within the next few days. The news of City's interest is likely to have come on the behest of their manager-elect Sven Goran Eriksson - but their bid is almost certainly doomed to failure. Liverpool have been brokering the Torres deal for the last week and they finally look set to seal the transfer this weekend. The move has been smoothed over after Rafa Benitez relented and allowed Luis Garcia to move in the opposite direction. Reports suggest that Garcia was keen to return to his homeland, where he is currently in the final stages of recovering from a long-term knee injury. Garcia is valued at €5million (£3.3million) and will seal his deal, like Torres, in the coming days.

Mort Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Torres to Man City!? ...I thought they'd be lucky to have at chance at signing Reo-Coker (who i hope goes to Villa, as he's the kind of player who'd benefit from a manager like O'Neil and would be wasted with Sven)... but there having a laugh if they honestly think they could land a player like Torres.

I thought this would happen, as soon as they get money they think that they can compete in the same league as the big four. They don't really have any appeal at the moment. Just survived the drop last year, they need to spend the money they get wisely to help them push for a top half finish next year.

True... the same's the case with WestHam and to a lesser extent Villa. In fact could also be said of us to some extent, despite having money for loans last season after MM came in no one decent was interested with RK in charge and even with a decent manager and a full rebuild in progress the likes of Hendrie and Saga are still disinclined to join. As for Man City, they need to get a decent striker or two (Kamara, Smith or Harewood?) and make up for the loss of Barton (Koumas, Gera or Murphy?) and Distin (Davies or Hyypiä?)... not exactly world beaters, but decent players who could stabilize the club and probably avoid any flirtation with relegation... wont happen of course.

Kamara looks all set to go to Fulham for 6.5 million. The names you've mentioned are all reasonable I feel. If they ever want to compete in the same market as the big four they need to start more realistic with their targets.
Mort Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Kamara looks all set to go to Fulham for 6.5 million. Don't want to underestimate the steller pulling power of Sven and the "The Bluz"
Foxhateram Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Man city and Sven = top 4 hahaha your having a laugh! svens tactics are way to negative for the premiership lets ply a 5-4-1 lads. I think Man city have got the wrong Manager they were linked with much better a few weeks back. mid table i reckon and i dont see them recruiting players like Torres, no way! theyve only put in a bid to spite liverpool. The quote the charimen came out with about man city being up there man united made me laugh so much. NO CHANCE!!!
Webbo Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 From what I heard on the radio yesterday, the only reason Torres is leaving athletico (the team he supports) is for champions league football, not likely any time soon at Man city.
Tevez Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Man City are just going to be one of them teams that try to buy everyone but fail.

I think Man city have got the wrong Manager they were linked with much better a few weeks back. When you think they were linked with Juan Ramos a few weeks ago , now there was a manager who could have done great things with a club like ManCity and would have brought in the right kind of players to not only stabilize the club but also press on up the table... still they've opted for Sven (more fool them!).
David Villa Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Man City try and buy Fernando Torres do not make me laugh please why would he want to got to a here or there team. They are a here or there team because they will never win the league or they will never get relegated and they wont get into europe they are like Villa, Newcastle and Pompey.
Joe. Posted 30 June 2007 Posted 30 June 2007 Man City have no chance of getting Torres. If Liverpool do get him, I just have a strong feeling he'll be a flop in the Premiership...
Brainy Posted 1 July 2007 Posted 1 July 2007 Hardly. Shevchenko was the wrong side of 30 and was signed for twice the amount he was actually worth.
Simi Posted 1 July 2007 Author Posted 1 July 2007 Hardly. Shevchenko was the wrong side of 30 and was signed for twice the amount he was actually worth. Plus they played in different leagues.
Simi Posted 4 July 2007 Author Posted 4 July 2007 Press Conference at 3pm. This quote from a Liverpool fan made me laugh You have to pay for quality these days don't ya ?
The Reverend Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 I dont think Torres will be the answer next season - i dont think hes what Liverpool are looking for. He's another Kuyt, wins balls in the air, scores a few goals etc..., but Liverpool need that 25 goal a season man to push on for the Premiership. Theres not many around, but there were better options i think.
Tommeh Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 Great signing for the pool in my opinion, some of Rafa's signings have been very debatable over the years e.g. Morientes, Bellemy, Gonzalez, Aurellio, Pauletta, Fowler I'm also yet to be convinced by Kuyt. But I certainly think Torres will be a huge asset for them. Best Pool signing since Gerrard and Carragher joined their academy
Geo V Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 An amazing player. Im glad world-class players will continue to arrive in the country to make the premiership a better watch. Lucky scouse barstewards.
Raise Cattle Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 Liverpool need someone like Da Silva. I think Arsenal have got the better striker.
Gené and Tonic Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 I agree that Rafa's signings have been very hit and miss. It seems he is excellent at scouting young talent across Europe and South America, but many of his signings have been poor. Bellamy - Not good enough for Liverpool - 6mil Nunez - Just crap Morientes - Didn't do much at all Fowler - Was past it Pennant - Not good enough again Gonzales - Still needs to prove himself - may be better this season Kuyt - Not a 12mil pound player I'm sure there's more I haven't mentioned. Having said that he's made some great signings: Sissoko Alonso Mascherano Agger Aurellio But not enough for the amount of money he's had to spend over the past few years.
Finnegan Posted 4 July 2007 Posted 4 July 2007 Liverpool need someone like Da Silva. I think Arsenal have got the better striker. hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahaha.
