Soar Fox Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 There is a player who got released by Man City called Stephen Jordan who is a left back would anybody fancy us signing him? Im not sure if he has found a club yet but I think he would be a good player.

Good shout, I think a few other clubs are sniffing around him though, we would have to move quickly.
Manwell Pablo Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 How can you tell that though, he only played a few senior games, it'd be hard for anyone here to be able to judge properly. Sheehan isn't good enough.
Manwell Pablo Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 I believe the question was "Have we signed anyone to play left back" and not have we signed someone who is good at left back. Indeed, and as James Chambers is of no use at left back, and wasn't signed to play there, and we haven't signed Sheehan or Mattock this summer, I believe we haven't signed any one to play left back.

Well the OS said he could play there so... we have in fact signed someone who can play there.
BigGibbo Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 i'd love a 3-5-2 of------n'gotti------mcauley-------kisnorbo kaebi-------------------------------------------mattock ...etc. COULD be very interesting! ----------------------- nielsen --------kisnorbo------n'gotty--------mcauley kaabi -----------------------------------------mattock ----------------------kishishev ----------wesolowski ------------hellings -------------hume-------------------cort subject to change if and when we sign new players im happy with that to start against blackpool, anyone????????
The Reverend Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 The games i saw Sheehan play, i didnt think he looked out of place at all (apart from that Crewe game, where he didnt have his best game, but was nowhere near as bad as everyone is making out). Give him a chance i say.
Candidcamera Posted 9 July 2007 Author Posted 9 July 2007 Last time I remember a back 3 was under Martin O'Neill.
Scow Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 Last time I remember a back 3 was under Martin O'Neill. Last time I remember a back 3 was under Craig Levein (vs QPR home 2005)
Candidcamera Posted 9 July 2007 Author Posted 9 July 2007 As we invaraibly lost at home I would guess we lost that match. I can't remember this being a Craig Levein tactic at all. I think it depends upon the players to make it work and motivating them is paramount.

To be fair, the 3-5-2 under Levein was only used for a few games.
city1993 Posted 9 July 2007 Posted 9 July 2007 think chambers can also play left back He can but it's not his prefered position, I would play Mattock, but we really need someone else in there also, because he can't play every week.
gilesyboy Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 Whatever happens, whether we bring in a new left-back or not, I would be disappointed if we resorted to the suggested 5-3-2 wing back formation. The only time I have ever seen a team use it was McClaren's England against Croatia, it made 3 of the ten best centre halves in the world look awful. Didn't O'Neil play that system, Guppy and Impey, with Taggs, Elliot and mad Frank in the centre or have I spent too much time on my Champ Manager 2000/2001 edition?
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 Well the OS said he could play there so... we have in fact signed someone who can play there. Yes....but he's been signed to play at right back. What would be the point in signing a right back to play at left back.
XFS Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 Why cant Mattock play every week - Bale virtually did and Mattock is better than him!
Pete_foxes Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 Is there no more news about that young left back from Nantes? I guess if hes good enough we'd probably sign him
Thracian Posted 10 July 2007 Posted 10 July 2007 Why cant Mattock play every week - Bale virtually did and Mattock is better than him! Even this early in pre-season training Mattock looks fit enough to play every day and I've never noticed him struggling either with regular matches or with the additional travelling to international tournaments. I don't know that I'd label him "better than Bale" right now. Not because he is or isn't but because he's got enough to cope with winning his place in the team and keeping it. Sheehan on current perormance looks like better competition than Mattock would ever have had last year and if Sheehan's bound for Lincoln according to rumour, then presumably MA believes he'll have an even better alternative by the time the season starts.

Yes, but not necessarily about how good a centre-back is, it's about whether you have the ability to adapt to a different system. As you say, England's 3 centre backs looked awful against Croatia, therefore they don't have that adaptability, but the centre-backs we have may be able to play well as a three.
