lildave3 Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 Wils is driving me to Manchester Stop rubbing it in will you
Thracian Posted 12 July 2007 Posted 12 July 2007 Driving! It's almost phobia inducing these days. There are so many speed cameras I've even started looking for them in the boot. And so many signs I sometimes think it's a clever ploy secretly designed to help newly arrived immigrants. The idea is to put so much reading at the side of the road there's no excuse for any of them to arrive in middle Britain without knowing the language. Remember when roads were predictable?. If you could see two miles ahead the road would be pretty well staight and mostly hazard free. But look away for a split-second now and you can guarantee there'll be a contrived chicane, management cones, average speed monitors, rumble strips or humps so big they rip your exhaust to pieces. We don't have roads any more we have assault courses. Who dreams these things up? A retired interrogation specialist who specialises in psychological torture is my guess?. You know the sort. They can't stand anyone to have a moment's peace and would leave a light burning in your cell all night. Then there's the speed limits. It's like watching numbers on an tennis club scorehoard, only faster. Thirty, 40, 30. 15, 30, 40...except the Highways Authority game never ends and by the time you lapse into a hypnotic trance you've no idea what the sodding speed limit is. Nor is it any help looking at your surroundings. The A5 is pretty straight and true but it's still 40mph with nothing in sight but trees, countryside and a few giant warehouses. Soon they'll want you to travel so slowly the only gear a car will have is reverse.
