Alternatives to iTunes

Recommended Posts

Considering joining eMusic, am fed up of the protection attached to iTunes files. Are there any other alternatives? eMusic is good value but really doesn't cater for my taste very well, it's far too Uncut Magazine and not NME enough. I am an indie kid at heart.

Other than torrents, obviously.

Legal downloads? Legal downloads? Pfffft.

Anyone know any of the not so legal sites???

Yep

*whispers* but it's a secret.

*whispers close to ear* mininova.org or Pirate Bay.something

On a serious note, isn't WIPPIT supposed to have a strong indie leaning?

I am on EMUSIC while it doesn't have some of the major label bands it does have plenty of undiscovered gems to uncover as per your other thread all the Fugazi, Minor Threat, Bllck Flag releases are on there. which should keep you going for a while!!

I never fail to find anything to download and at the price you can't really go wrong to be honest AND they are all in a MP3 format with no copy protection attached!!

I've been reading that you can buy DRM (Digital Rights Managment) free tracks now from the iTunes store mate, not sure if it is in full force yet though.

Well, what is indie, anyway? eMusic.com provides exclusively music from independent labels. And considering the other thread you started, you might want to give this section a look.

I find eMu to be a bargain (and convenient with mp3 format) and can usually dig up something worth downloading every month... but I'm not so sure if it translates into as good of a deal in the UK. I know eMu now has a different UK service with a different price structure (about twice as much as what I pay here for the same amount of downloads! :o), and there are as though there are a few in what one can download there (it seems like some more popular UK indie groups are unavailable for download in the UK--their UK labels probably are not on eMusic but their stuff is released on different labels in the U.S.)... plus, as you mentioned, there's so much obscure crap on the site... but it might be worth your while just to check it out and milk the free downloads. There are also loads of reissued gems from the punk/post-punk/hardcore eras on eMu, and I've noticed that most of my recent downloads have been of older music rather than from current groups.

Thanks, I had a look and these are pretty good sites, you have to sort through some rubbish but the quality is there.

Pirate Bay does have a lot of northern european trash.

Mininova has the better search engine.
