Levein sees his qualities as cover for first choice Gareth Williams and Stephen Hughes and describes him as a 'model professional'.
Anish Posted 24 February 2005 Posted 24 February 2005 What?!!?! Gemmill hasn't even been in the squad for a month or so, why on earth give him an extended contract?! This is a disgrace - we all thought and expected that he'd be released when his contract expired. He has done nothing to warrant an extension. Get a grip Levein.

Mark Posted 24 February 2005 Posted 24 February 2005 I've come to terms with this now If he's only staying to help the youngsters i can understand and put up with that. But if the time comes where we have a few injuries and he gets picked to be a sub instead of Dawson/Weso then that's just wrong.

Bilko Posted 25 February 2005 Posted 25 February 2005 Not too concerned about Gemmill staying until the end of the season but what about Rab Douglas? Sorry but he is the original 'dodgy' keeper. Lost Celtic the UEFA Cup final and according to my Celtic supporting friends is a liability. He is not in Ian Walker's class and l hope this is just a ploy on Levein's part to make Walker sign. Please Craig...'DON'T GO THERE'!

I've never ever rated Douglas, and I can't understand why MON hasn't brought a quality keeper to Celtic yet. It would truly be a decrease in quality if we brought in Rab instead of Walker..

Levein has spoken to Douglas' agent about the Scotland international whose time at Celtic could be coming to an end after his blunder in Sunday's Old Firm game. Douglas would be available on a Bosman and Levein told the Daily Record: "I have drawn up a list of maybe six keepers who I'm interested in and Douglas is one of them. "But it all depends on what happens with Walker. He is out of contract and is on big money so I don't know whether he will stay on. "I wanted to find out what was happening with big Rab but that's not been sorted out. "I don't want to bring players in unless they are the right people. It's not a case of I am going to spend it no matter what but if something comes up before the deadline then we will look at it." I suspect CL has drawn up a list of six goalies we could maybe afford or are available (Rab happens to be one) to suss out the maximum he might have to pay to replace Walker, he will then know what his bargaining strengths are and what he needs to offer Walker, that's why he hasn't offered Walker a deal yet. I wouldn't be surprised if LCFC leaked this to put pressure on Walker to accept another much reduced deal. On the other hand he might think RD is better than IW

I may be a bit rash, but this rumour does make me uneasy. We should definitely do all we can to holde on to Ian Walker for a year or two more. Of course he should take a pay cut, but he should still be paid well. He's proven and he's done very well here and unless he gets more injuries, he's a safe pair of hands at the back, which is more than you could say about Douglas. If we get a replacement we should at least aim for the same quality as Walker or someone who comes close. I wouldn't mind having Coyne back ...
Anish Posted 25 February 2005 Posted 25 February 2005 I echo your concerns Shen - Douglas is a liability and could turn out to be Pressman MkII.

But Levein played it low key, saying: "I talked with his agent over the situation but I have also talked to another four or five other agents of various players. "That doesn't mean that (the signing of Douglas) is what we are going to do. "It is one option. At some stage, I will have to talk to Ian Walker about a new contract and if he says no then I will have to have a contingency plan. That is what management is all about."
Chandler Posted 27 February 2005 Posted 27 February 2005 A lot of teams are not prepared to shell out on a good keeper. Part of the reason why Chelsea are where they are is because of Peter Cech (only Buffon better?). Howard and Carroll **** up Man U whenever they can. Almunia and Lehman (the world's unofficial No 1 according to himself) are slowly destroying Arsenal. If Levein gets his hands on Douglas it really will be bye bye Leicester. Like I've said all along.

How many times this season has Petr Cech been Chelsea's MOTM? I'd say none.

Cech is a great keeper, yes he has a great defense in front of him, but so did Schmeichel, Seaman, Barthez (for France) as does Buffon nowadays. They won't have had many saves to make, but when the defence fails, that's when they come to the rescue, and to be fair, Cech has done his job impeccably this season. Which fully justifies some credit. Rab Douglas is utter shite, I can understand MON trying to defend him, but he has to. He's not anywhere near good enough a 'keeper to wear a Leicester shirt IMO. We've had a tradition of having excellent 'keepers here at Leicester, and hopefully CL will continue the trend...

He makes so much blunders in a season and could end up being Pressman MkII. I know we have to make contingency plans in case Walker leaves, but Douglas shouldn't be one of them. There are many better goalkeepers around - off the top of my head I'd suggest Jimmy Walker (ex-Walsall) from WEst Ham who's not getting a game and has proved he is great in this division.
